    This paper tests costly attention models of consumers' misreaction to opaque taxes. We report an online shopping experiment that involves shrouded sales taxes that are exogenously varied within consumers over time. Some consumers systematically underreact to sales taxes whereas others systematically overreact, but higher stakes decrease both under- and overreaction.     During 1987, the National Cancer Institute conducted a radio public service campaign using a well-known celebrity spokesperson, which was targeted to teenage audiences to warn them of the dangers of smoking. This article describes the influence of (a) the celebrity spokesperson and (b) personal contact with station personnel regarding the media gatekeepers' response to the campaign.
