  • Refined Classification System for Thermally Damaged Human Remains by Body Segment

Elayne Pope, Chelsey Juarez et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2022•Cited by: 1

This article provides a comprehensive regional approach to the classification of thermal damage of soft tissue and bone by assessing the body in segments, consisting of the head, torso, arms, and legs. The changes associated with each stage are generated from over 150 bodies over 12 years with the San Luis Obispo Fire Investigation Strike Team (SLO FIST), including photographs, video, and recorded statements. Each of the six stages represents a r…

We report on the functionality, available support, and research capability of the Forensic Anthropology Database for Assessing Methods Accuracy (FADAMA; DOJ DUBX0213). FADAMA is an online repository for case data from identified forensic skeletal cases. The goal of FADAMA is to address the lack of adequate measures for assessing accuracy and reliability of forensic anthropology methods. FADAMA requires users to apply for access with their univers…

  • Ancestry, health, and lived experiences of enslaved Africans in 18th century Charleston

    Open Access•Raquel E Fleskes, Ade A Ofunniyin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 90

OBJECTIVES: In 2013, the burials of 36 individuals of putative African ancestry were discovered during renovation of the Gaillard Center in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The Charleston community facilitated a bioarchaeological and mitogenomic study to gain insights into the lives of these unknown persons, referred to as the Anson Street Ancestors, including their ancestry, health, and lived experiences in the 18th century. METHODS: Metric …

  • Oxygen and Hydrogen Isotopes in Human Hair and Tap Water

Chelsey Juarez, Chelsey A Juarez et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2019

This study investigated the relationship between 18O and 2H isotopes in samples of Mexican hair and drinking water. The purpose of this study was twofold: to quantify the relationship between isotopes in Mexican hair and tap water, in order to understand the impact of water stress and differing socioeconomic status on accurate predictions of drinking water; and to determine whether currently existing semimechanistic models can accurately represen…

  • Commingled and Unprovenanced

    Lindsay H Trammell, Chelsey A Juarez et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2018

Unprovenanced skeletal remains were located by law enforcement in a private residence in rural Missouri. Forensic anthropological assistance was requested to determine the origin and medicolegal significance of the material. The homeowner provided written documentation that the remains were legally obtained from an archaeological site in Guatemala; however, police expressed concern they were actually illegally looted and retained from a local his…

  • Past or present? Differentiating California prehistoric native American remains from forensic cases

    Open Access•Cris E Hughes, Cris Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 12

The goal of this project is to provide additional data and statistical analyses for differentiating between prehistoric/historic Native American remains and modern forensic cases that may be potentially confusing. Forensic anthropologists often receive requests from local law enforcement to infer whether skeletal remains are of forensic or non-forensic significance. Skeletal remains of non-forensic significance are commonly of Native American anc…
