  • Defying the Logic of the Nation-State

Matthias B Lehmann, Matthias Lehmann•ARTICLE•The Jewish Quarterly Review•2025

June 1911: the Alliance Israélite Universelle, the premier Jewish philanthropic organization, created in 1860, holds elections for its Central Committee. What had been a staid, largely pro forma procedure for decades turned into an international drama as competing lists, presented by the incumbent Central Committee in Paris and the leaders of the German Alliance committee in Berlin, vied for the votes of tens of thousands of members on four conti…

  • Plädoyer für eine Klauselverordnung

    Matthias Lehmann, Danny Busch•ARTICLE•JuristenZeitung•2023

  • Baron Hirsch, the Jewish Colonization Association and the Future of the Jews

    Matthias Lehmann•ARTICLE•Jewish Studies Quarterly•2020

When Baron Maurice de Hirsch established the Jewish Colonization Association in 1891 to facilitate the settlement of Russian Jews in agricultural colonies, it was the largest charitable organization in the world. This article demonstrates that, far from representing a proto-nationalist project anticipating »territorialism« (much less Zionism), Hirsch was uninterested in collective notions of Jewish »peoplehood.« In a little-known 1889 interview, …

  • A new book in Jewish affairs begins”

Matthias B Lehmann, Matthias Lehmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2018•References: 4

This article looks at Jewish responses to the death of the banker, railroad entrepreneur, and philanthropist Maurice de Hirsch in 1896, the same year that Theodor Herzl published his Jewish State. Examining printed eulogies and obituaries that appeared in Jewish newspapers, from Eastern Europe to France, and from Germany to the Ottoman Empire, the article demonstrates how contemporaries understood the passing of Baron Hirsch as the end of a golde…

  • Jeremy Cohen. A Historian in Exile

    Open Access•Matthias B Lehmann, Matthias Lehmann•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

Many of the great Jewish historians—from Heinrich Graetz and Yitzhak Baer to Amos Funkenstein and Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi—have written about Shevet Yehudah, that classic of Hebrew letters from the sixteenth century. Jeremy Cohen’s A Historian in Exile now offers a new and impressively detailed analysis of a book that Yerushalmi once described as “a precociously sociological analysis of Jewish historical suffering” (Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi, Zakhor: …

  • Bail-in and Private International Law

    Open Access•Matthias Lehmann•ARTICLE•International and Comparative Law…•2017•References: 12

Bank resolution is key to avoiding a repetition of the global financial crisis, where failing financial institutions had to be bailed out with taxpayers’ money. It permits recapitalizing banks or alternatively winding them down in an orderly fashion without creating systemic risk. Resolution measures, however, suffer from structural weakness. They are taken by States with territorially limited powers, yet they concern entities or groups with glob…

  • Entmaterialisierung, Entgrenzung und Recht

    Matthias Lehmann•ARTICLE•Archiv für Rechts- und…•2012

Two phenomena characterize the modern world more than any other: dematerialization and de-bordering. Dematerialization is ubiquitous in everyday life, which is increasingly dominated by the incorporeal and the virtual, from software to the internet and electronic money. De-bordering means that state frontiers lose more and more of their importance. De-bordering is reinforced by dematerialization because the “lightness” of incorporeal objects faci…
