Investigating the Íslendingasögur as Prosimetrum
This article lays out methods of analysing the combination of prose and verse in the Íslendingasögur (Sagas of Icelanders) using a database that categorizes the prosimetric features of the corpus. The article gives an overview of the design of the database and explains how it achieves two major research goals. The first is to facilitate quantitative analysis of patterns observed across the prosimetric sagas. The second is to provide a foundation …
Anonymity and the Textual Construction of Authority in Prosimetrum
The ways in which anonymity participates in the textual construction of authority is the focus of this chapter, which proceeds through an investigation of the literary effects that were achieved in two different kinds of medieval Icelandic prosimetrum, examples which demonstrate how literate authors exploited the potential of orally transmitted poetry to enrich their prose. The case studies are drawn from Gylfaginning by Snorri Sturluson, where a…

A Handbook to Eddic Poetry
This is the first comprehensive and accessible survey in English of Old Norse eddic poetry: a remarkable body of literature rooted in the Viking Age, which is a critical source for the study of early Scandinavian myths, poetics, culture and society. Dramatically recreating the voices of the legendary past, eddic poems distil moments of high emotion as human heroes and supernatural beings alike grapple with betrayal, loyalty, mortality and love. T…

Learning and understanding in the Old Norse world
Tools of Literacy
Old Icelandic Literature and Society
From the period of settlement (870–930) to the end of the fourteenth century, Icelanders produced one of the most varied and original literatures of medieval Europe. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive account of Old Icelandic literature within its social setting and across a range of genres. An international team of specialists examines the ways in which the unique social experiment in Iceland, a kingless society without an establi…
From orality to literacy in medieval Iceland
When the technology of alphabetic literacy was introduced into Scandinavia by the Christian Church, it changed the nature of communication practices in some discourses, such as law, dramatically; in others which were less implicated in the institutional practices of the Church, its effect was probably minimal, or at least gradual. During the first millennium there is evidence that the inscription of runes on stone, wood or bone had been widely, t…
