Geographic Differences in the Effect of Immigration on the Native Wage Distribution
This paper examines geographic differences in the effect of immigration on the wage distribution of native Italian workers. The results suggest an insignificant effect across the wage distribution in northern provinces, but large and significant effects in the lower and middle parts of the distribution in the south. This is entirely because immigration pushed up wages at the lower end of the female wage distribution in southern local areas. This …
The Impact of Cohesion Policy on Regional Differences in Support for the European Union
Cohesion Policy is a core policy of the European Union, the main objective of which is to address uneven economic growth across the EU by promoting balanced and sustainable development. Given its characteristics, it certainly has a great impact on the daily life of European citizens and can compensate population groups and places less favoured by the implementation of the internal market and economic and monetary union. As a result, Cohesion Poli…

Innovation, heterogeneous firms and the region
Innovation, heterogeneous firms and the region: evidence from Spain. Regional Studies. This paper investigates the role of regional factors in innovation performance, controlling for firms’ absorptive capacity and other sources of firm heterogeneity. The findings for a sample of firms in Spain support the hypothesis that regional determinants matter, though their role is subtler than is frequently assumed. Rather than exerting a direct influence …
Firm exports, innovation and the regional dimension in Spain
Firm exports, innovation and the regional dimension in Spain. Regional Studies. Firm-level data are used to estimate the effect of product and process innovations on firms’ exports in each Spanish NUTS-2 region. Results show that the effect of innovation on exports is far from regionally uniform. The gap in the propensity to export between innovative and non-innovative firms, conditional to other sources of firm heterogeneity, is shown to be part…
Double Penalty in Returns to Education
This article examines the returns to education taking into consideration the existence of educational mismatches in the formal and informal employment of a developing country. Results show that the returns of surplus, required and deficit years of schooling are different in the two sectors. Moreover, they suggest that these returns vary along the wage distribution, and that the pattern of variation differs for formal and informal workers. In part…

Human Capital and Regional Wage Gaps
n This paper uses micro-level data to analyse the effect of human capital on regional wage differentials. The results for the set of Spanish regions confirm that they differ in the endowment of human capital, but also that the return that individuals obtain from it varies sharply across regions. Regional heterogeneity in returns is especially intense in the case of education, particularly when it is considered its effect on the employability of i…
Profitability of Investments in Education
n The objective of this paper is to furnish new evidence concerning the aggregate profitability of the accumulation of educational human capital. In addition to the traditional measure of the return to human capital, combining the information on its shadow price with the social cost of providing education allows us to confirm the profitability of investments in education as a tool for promoting economic growth. The possibility of obtaining estima…

Breaking the panels
This paper proposes a test statistic for the null hypothesis of panel stationarity that allows for the presence of multiple structural breaks. Two different specifications are considered depending on the structural breaks affecting the individual effects and/or the time trend. The model is flexible enough to allow the number of breaks and their position to differ across individuals. The test is shown to have a standard normal limit distribution w…
Geographical distribution of unemployment in Spain
Lopez-Bazo E., Del Barrio T. and Artis M. (2005) Geographical distribution of unemployment in Spain, Regional Studies 39 , 305-318. This paper estimates the external shape of the regional distribution of unemployment rates and it studies intradistribution dynamics to analyse the extent of regional inequalities in unemployment rates in Spain over the last decades. It also assesses the contribution of disequilibrium and equilibrium factors in givin…
