  • Strategies for green industrial and innovation policy–an analysis of policy alignment, misalignment, and realignment around dominant designs in the EV sector

Open Access•Easwaran Narassimhan, Zdeňka Myslíková et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Governments in industrialized as well as emerging economies are racing to implement policies to accelerate clean energy innovation and capture the economic benefits of decarbonization. This paper explores which combination of technology-push and demand-pull policies best situates a country to lead in clean energy innovation, as new or dominant designs emerge and replace older technologies. A new analytical framework for green industrial policy is…

  • Carbon Pricing in the US

Open Access•Easwaran Narassimhan, Stefan Koester et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2022•References: 9

Carbon pricing is a key policy instrument used to steer markets towards the adoption of low-carbon technologies. In the last two decades, several carbon pricing policies have been implemented or debated at the state and federal levels in the US. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and the California cap-and-trade policy are the two regional policies operational today. While there is no federal policy operational today, several carbon pricing p…

  • From fossil to low carbon

Open Access•Fang Zhang, Kelly Sims Gallagher et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 3

A review of global and national energy research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) investments between 2000 and 2018 reveals that global public energy RD&D and cleaner energy RD&D investments dramatically increased, but then plateaued after 2009. In absolute values, nuclear energy has held steady, fossil energy contracted, and clean energy RD&D quadrupled. As a percentage of overall investments, both fossil fuel and nuclear investments contra…

  • Banking on coal? Drivers of demand for Chinese overseas investments in coal in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Vietnam

Open Access•Kelly Sims Gallagher, Rishikesh Ram Bhandary et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020•Cited by: 11•References: 8

This paper investigates why new coal-fired power plants are being financed and built in South and Southeast Asia given that new coal plants without carbon capture and storage are incompatible with a 1.5 °C temperature goal. The paper particularly focuses on developing countries where these coal-fired power plants are being built that are recipients of Chinese government-backed finance. The central research question of this paper is: Which factors…

  • The role of demand-side incentives and charging infrastructure on plug-in electric vehicle adoption

    Open Access•Easwaran Narassimhan, Caley Johnson•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

In the US, over 400 state and local incentives have been issued to increase the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) since 2008. This article quantifies the influence of key incentives and enabling factors like charging infrastructure and receptive demographics on PEV adoption. The study focuses on three central questions. First, do consumers respond to certain types of state level vehicle purchase incentives? Second, does the density of …
