Conimbriga
In the summer of 2022, a large-scale geophysical survey was conducted in the Roman city of Conimbriga (Condeixa-a-Nova, District of Coimbra, Portugal). An area of 7.32 ha was covered with magnetic measurements using the CMP 7-probe fluxgate gradiometer array, combined with a GNSS-RTK positioning system. At the same time, an area of 0.9 ha was investigated using the IRIS HI–MOD (IDS) system, equipped with five 600 MHz antennas and also combined wi…
From a Medieval Town to the Modern Fortress of Rosas (Girona-Spain). Combining Geophysics and Archaeological Excavation to Understand the Evolution of a Strategic Coastal Settlement
The paper presents the results of the archaeogeophysical study carried out in the medieval villa of Rosas (Girona-Spain). The village was built in a space that had already been occupied in Greek and Roman times. In the sixteenth century, a large fortress was built around the town. Once the village was abandoned in the seventeenth century, the site underwent a major conversion process, with the construction of military buildings and the demolition…
Lights and Shadows on interpreting Archaeological Geophysics using historic cartography
Interpretation of archaeological geophysics was supported by multiple sources, cartography proves useful but requires considering intentions and errors of authors
Rise of the Nomad Kings—Pastoral Polities in the Horn of Africa ( a.d. 650–1000)
The archaeology of nomadic societies in northeastern Africa is understudied in comparison with sedentary populations. This is particularly the case in the Horn of Africa. The image of nomadic groups is still quite static, as if they had changed little over the millennia. Recent archaeological research in Somaliland and Djibouti is helping to change this narrative. In this article, we focus on the emergence of nomadic polities that occurred during…
Geophysical survey of the Roman and post-Roman site of Proendos, Ribeira Sacra, Lugo, Spain
We present a geophysical survey work in the Roman site of Proendos, Sober, Lugo, Spain, which has been carried out on 27,000 square meters of surface area. From a methodological perspective, two different techniques have been compared on the same plot, Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometry, showing the pros and cons of each one in granite substrate environments. The results of the chosen method (GPR) have shown a complex and long-term u…
Geophysical survey at the early Christian complex of Son Peretó (Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain)
Rural basilicas are the most important evidence of Christianization of the countryside on the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Recent investigations of rural landscape transformations suggest that some churches were built along communication routes and linked to preexisting settlements. To obtain new data that could support this hypothesis, a geophysical survey has been carried out at the early Christian complex of Son Peretó, one of…
La ciudad romana de El Pueyo de Belchite
Se presenta un avance de resultados de los trabajos realizados entre 2012 y 2014 en el marco del proyecto de investigación arqueológica en el yacimiento de El Pueyo de Belchite, Zaragoza
