  • Health, safety training, and exposure reduction practices among U. S. fire investigators: A cross-sectional study

    Open Access•Alberto J Cabán-Martinez, Anton Stremousov et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background: Fire investigators conduct post-fire scene work with potential exposure to combustion byproducts, damaged structures, and psychosocial stressors, yet data on exposure reduction practices and health characteristics remain limited. The objective of this analysis is to characterize training, protective practices, self-reported exposures, and health indicators among U. S. fire investigators. Methods: As part of a national photovoice study…

  • Associations between Perceived Racial Discrimination and Tobacco Cessation among Diverse Treatment Seekers

    Monica Webb Hooper, Patricia F Calixte-Civil et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination was greater among African American/Black smokers compared with non-Hispanic Whites. Perceived discrimination was negatively associated with tobacco cessation in the full sample, and for African Americans at 6-months post-intervention. These data have implications for intervention delivery and health disparities

  • Reasons for Exclusion from a Smoking Cessation Trial: An Analysis by Race/Ethnicity

Monica Webb Hooper, Taghrid Asfar et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2019

A notable proportion of smokers were ineligible for this RCT, with SMI as the greatest single cause. Racial/ethnic minorities were more likely to be excluded, with African Americans deemed ineligible for multiple reasons. Findings have implications for RCT generalizability, addressing tobacco disparities and health equity

  • Cervical cancer sociodemographic and diagnostic disparities in Florida: A population-based study (1981–2013) by stage at presentation

Aliyah Gauri, Sarah Messiah et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2018

Objective: Florida has one of the highest cervical cancer mortality rates and socioeconomically diverse populations in the United States. We used statewide population-based cancer registry data to assess disparities in cervical cancer stage at diagnosis. Design: Primary invasive adult female cervical cancer patients in the Florida Cancer Data Registry (1981-2013) were linked with 2000 United States Census data. Early (localized) and advanced (reg…

Background: Haitian women bear some of the highest mortality rates from cervical cancer and HIV/AIDS in South Florida, indicating a critical need for culturally relevant preventive interventions within this community. Methods: We piloted an illustration-based, community health worker (CHW) intervention aimed at improving HPV and cervical cancer knowledge and screening behaviors among twenty-one sexually active Haitian women in Miami. Surveys were…

  • Is Greater Acculturation Associated With an Increased Prevalence of Cardiovascular Risk Factors Among Latinos in South Florida

    Aileen Chang, Aileen Y Chang et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2015•References: 32

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of acculturation with various cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) among Latinos with diabetes in South Florida. METHODS: In a cross-sectional analysis of data collected from 300 Latinos with poorly controlled diabetes we measured acculturation using the Marin Short Acculturation Scale. We examined correlations between acculturation and the following 7 CRFs: hemoglobin A1C, low-density lipoprotein, systolic blo…
