Constructing and performing hotel hospitality culture
This article discusses the social processes underpinning the co-construction and performance of hotel hospitality culture. The influence of culture within the hospitality sector has inspired conceptual and empirical research resulting in a significant literature base. However, gaps remain in understanding how culture manifests itself through behaviour in the publicly accessible areas of a hotel. This gap was addressed by research designed to unco…
Conceptualising risk in cruise holidays: A critical review
The knowledge base for cruise holidays is conceptually underdeveloped and narrowly focused on health and safety and environmental concerns. This critical review of risk research in relation to ocean cruising identifies knowledge gaps revealing the significance of factors such as financial, performance, time‐loss, opportunity, functional, social and psychological risk. This review calls for a wider conceptualisation of risk that moves beyond an em…
Lesbians and Gay Men's Vacation Motivations, Perceptions, and Constraints: A Study of Cruise Vacation Choice
This study explores the push-pull vacation motivations of gay male and lesbian consumers and examines how these underpin their perceptions and purchase constraints of a mainstream and LGBT(1) cruise. Findings highlight a complex vacation market. Although lesbians and gay men share many of the same travel motivations as their heterosexual counterparts, the study reveals sexuality is a significant variable in their perception of cruise vacations, w…
Stalking the cannibals: Photographic behaviour on the Sepik River
Outwardly Dennis O'Rourke's film, Cannibal Tours, is just another travel documentary, but to categorize it thus is to misunderstand its significance. `Straight' readings of the film present it as an example of the negative impacts of tourism or as a commentary on touristic encounters with the exotic. We part company from such readings because they largely ignore the filmmaker's art, the role of O'Rourke in constructing the film's narrative. O'Rou…
Using Visual Evidence in Tourism Research
This section has been specifically introduced to include findings of special significance and problem areas of subtle nuances in tourism research. Insightful contributions presenting the state-of-the-art preferably from the developing societies will be appreciated. It will also encourage scholars and authors to think against the grain, probing the consistency of theoretical notions and research trends whose heuristic value is all too often taken …
