Open Access•Danyang Luo, Sainan Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) in China experience high HIV prevalence, yet little is known about the HIV testing behaviors of MSM among those who engage in sexualized drug use (SDU). Clarifying these patterns is essential for designing targeted HIV prevention interventions. METHODS: We analyzed baseline survey data from 1,800 MSM recruited in Chengdu, Suzhou, and Wuhan (2021-2022). Participants reported HIV testing history and SDU, …

Open Access•Danyang Luo, Qiaomei Fu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

This qualitative study explores the sociocultural meanings and harm-reduction practices surrounding poppers use among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. Twenty in-depth interviews conducted in Guangzhou reveal that poppers are experienced as both a routine facilitator of sexual pleasure and intimacy, and a source of moral tension. The emergence of direct-to-consumer (DTC) telemedicine offers unique opportunities for patients to directly access health services when needed. However, the quality of STI care provided by telemedicine platforms remains unknown. After systemically identifying the universe of DTC telemedicine p…

  • Gay Dating Apps in China

Bolin Cao, Kumi Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 66

Gay dating apps have become increasingly popular and been intensively used. However, studies that closely examine the effects of gay dating app usage on mental health outcomes are few. This study tackles an unsolved question on whether gay dating apps alleviate or exacerbate loneliness through perceptions of sexuality stigma. A cross-sectional online survey from 371 Chinese gay or bisexual men found that the intensity of gay dating app usage is p…

  • Sexualized Drug Use Among Female Sex Workers from Eight Cities in China

Open Access•Jason J Ong, Mingzhou Xiong et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2022

There is a rich literature on sexualized drug use (i.e., drug use before or during sex) for men who have sex with men but less data from female sex workers (FSW), particularly from low- and middle-income countries. We describe the sexual and reproductive health outcomes in FSW reporting sexualized drug use. In 2019, we conducted a cross-sectional study in eight cities from seven provinces in China. We recruited FSW through community organizations…

  • What do we know about interventions to reduce intersectional stigma and discrimination in the context of HIV? A systematic review

Anne Stangl, Kaitlyn Atkins et al.•ARTICLE•Stigma and Health•2022

There is ample literature on interventions to reduce human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) stigma and discrimination and extant theory around intersectionality. However, the integration of intersectionality into the design and implementation of stigma reduction interventions is nascent. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we reviewed 23 studies from six countries to examine the state of the evidence o…

People's beliefs in supernatural explanatory models of health and illness - beliefs in divine and/or supernatural forces to inform how they perceive, interpret, and respond to health and illness - may have important implications for their use of healthcare services, especially among individuals with lower socioeconomic status (SES). However, the relevance of such research for contexts with strong Confucian and Buddhist traditions and sexual minor…
