The Size-Color Illusion
Slides were made from Munsell color chips in three sizes, four hues, and two chromas; all had the same intensity. A direct-comparisons, forced-choice procedure was used with 100 male and female volunteers from psychology courses. When pairs of slides had the same size and chroma, the order of decreasing apparent size was red-purple, yellow-red, purple-blue, and green. At chroma/8, all comparisons were significant except yellow-red over purple-blu…
Water Balance and Titrated Pain Thresholds
Changes in sensitivity to electric foot shock were manipulated by subjecting 2 rats to 3 levels of water deprivation. Shock intensity was continuously titrated every 2 sec. through 20 increasing steps of alternating current. A bar-press reset the shock to its minimal value. The animals performed under conditions of 0, 21.5, and 45.5 hr. water deprivation. When water deprived, animals showed decreased sensitivity to shock. Frequency of bar-press r…
Recall of Temporally Compressed Auditory and Visual Information
100 Ss were presented with auditory and visual lists at rates from 180 to 360 words per min. After each list they were asked to recall as many of the words as possible. At lower rates, recall from auditory stimulation was superior to visual but this reversed at higher rates. Percentage of correct recall from either modality was shown to be a decreasing linear function of percentage compression of the stimuli. Ss imported significantly more incorr…
Influence of Creativity on Formation of Subjective Units
Rule Learning by Adolescents
78 Ss from 12 to 14 yr. old were tested on three rules: Inclusive disjunction, Joint denial, and Conditional. Errors made in reaching criterion indicated that these rules form a hierarchy from least to most difficult in the stated order. There was no evidence of any proactive inhibition in learning a new rule after having learned a different one. Performance improved with practice even when a 24-hr. delay was inserted between problems
Visual Illusion in Lengths of Words
Pairs of words containing the same numbers of letters were found to differ in apparent length if one member of the pair contained all short letters while the other contained some tall letters such as b or l. It was hypothesized that the difference was due to a visual distortion whereby the horizontal component of a word appeared to be shortened when its vertical component was increased
