The Pragmatics of Time and Space in Historical Events Modification in Fiction
The study identifies the pragmatic characteristics of time and space which appear in fiction historical discourse. High interdiscourse and intradiscourse pragmaticity of time is found in foregrounding unbounded time duration, its beginning and end, relative character of actions, temporal representation of event participants. As opposed to time, pragmaticity of space is significantly lower appearing in directed participants’ actions, which is due …
Experimental Methods of Exploring Multimodal Discourse
The study advances Crossmodal Alignment Framework to explore multimodal discourse in its three formats – semiotic, communicative and perceptive – via multimodal experiment. It considers the alignment patterns obtained from two semiotic modes (text and image), transferred in two communicative modes (speech and gesture), sensed by two perception modes (visual and audial). The common research framework determines the patterns as modulated by discour…
Mapping models in novel metaphors and their effect on gaze behavior and default interpretations in native and target languages
In the study, we address the problem of existing differences in reading and understanding novel metaphors in the text fragments in native and target languages (L1 and L2), with these differences potentially attributed to both the specifics of forming analogies in native and target languages, and the mapping characteristics of metaphors. The study identifies the contingency effects of several primary metaphors onto the gaze behavior and default in…
Reference Frame Modification in the Assessment of Discourse and Author’s Linguocreativity
The contrastive study develops the method of discourse linguocreativity analysis, which features reference frame modifications and helps identify major transformations in linguocreativity discourse profiles. We verify the method to assess linguocreativity in the works of M. Sholokhov, K. Paustovsky and S. Marshak representing both the discourse of children’s literature and the epistolary discourse. These discourse types and the author’s discourse…
Yu. S. Stepanov’s Method of Ascension and Cognitive-Semiotic Dimensions of Optimal Linguistic Creativity
In the study the method of ascension developed by Ju.S. Stepanov to explore the modifications in logical and philosophical dimensions of language is applied to explore cognitive-semiotic dimensions of optimal linguistic creativity. Following the system of linguistic creativity dimensions offered by O. K. Iriskhanova, which are formal, cognitive and ontologic, we study the balance of Fixed and Extending creativity (the concept introduced by T. Hof…
Linguistic creativity and discourse profiles of English language children’s novels
Contemporary discourse studies face the necessity to develop the methods of contrastive sub-discourse analysis which apply numeric and comparable data to diversify and describe sub-discourse types. The aim of the research is to propose a method of discourse profiling serving the purpose, and to further test the method in the contrastive study of linguistic creativity in different types of English language childrens novels. The category of linguis…
Linguistic Creativity in Cinematic Discourse and Discourse of Children’s Literature
The research aims to develop the method of contrastive analysis of linguistic creativity in discourse. The present study attracting two typologically different discourses, the cinematic discourse and the discourse of children's literature, demonstrates the 5-stage algorithm of contrastive frequency and contingency analysis of linguistic creativity parameters in all language levels, phonological, morphological, word building, lexical, syntactic an…
Perspective construal techniques in indirect non-referential naming
The research explores the perspective construal techniques applied in predicate indirect noun groups in Russian. In this case, the discourse perspective is construed with a highly salient ob-ject of perspective in the construed frame of reference. To achieve this effect, the speaker / narrator chooses a particular type of predicate indirect noun groups, such as predicate con-structions with the verbs of fictive motion, appearance, and being (exis…
Uniqueness and Typicality Effects in Heterosemiotic Units
The study develops the algorithm of typicality analysis within heterosemiotic units which integrate various semiotic systems and subsystems (multimodal and polycode). The algorithm is tested in four heterosemiotic units of text and image, speech and gesture, multi-discourse and multistylistic unities. The algorithm is a six-step procedure, it defines the type and character of the unit, its parametric activity, parametric synchronization and reson…
Age Factor and its Role in the Readers’ Comprehension of Stylistic Heterogeneity
The article discusses the role of the age factor in the readers’ comprehension of stylistically heterogeneous texts, here the text fragments containing figurative noun groups of salient and non-salient character. The salience effects on eye movement and default responses are studied in the oculographic experiment where the secondary school children had to read the sentences displaying figurativeness. The earlier detected statistically significant…
