  • How Campus Media Cover Sports

    Suzanne Huffman, C A Tuggle et al.•ARTICLE•Mass Communication & Society•2004•Cited by: 10•References: 5

Title IX has encouraged school administrators to work toward gender equity in athletics spending, and now many more women participate in college sports and earn college athletics scholarships than in the time before Title IX. This study was designed to assess whether Title IX has translated into equal coverage of men's and women's athletics by campus media. Based on these exploratory findings, the answer is no. College newspapers in the study cov…

  • ESPN's SportsCenter and Coverage of Women's Athletics

    Terrence Adams, C A Tuggle•ARTICLE•Mass Communication & Society•2004•Cited by: 17•References: 8

Since the passage of Title IX in 1972, participation in women's sports has grown dramatically. But despite the growing level of participation by female athletes at all competition levels and documented fan interest in women's athletics, coverage of women's sports remains inferior to that given male sports across all media. Tuggle's (1997) study showed that two national highlights programs (CNN's Sports Tonight and ESPN's SportsCenter) devoted onl…

  • A Descriptive Analysis of NBC's Coverage of the 2000 Summer Olympics

    C A Tuggle, Suzanne Huffman et al.•ARTICLE•Mass Communication & Society•2002•Cited by: 11•References: 8

This study examines the amount of NBC's 2000 Olympics coverage devoted to women's athletics. Analysis showed that women received proportionately less coverage in 2000 than they did in 1996 on the U.S. network, and that coverage focused on individual events, with women competing in team sports receiving relatively little coverage. As was the case in 1996, women who competed in 2000 in sports involving power or hard physical contact received almost…

  • Live Reporting in Television News

    C A Tuggle, Suzanne Huffman•ARTICLE•Journal of Broadcasting &…•2001•Cited by: 7•References: 1

In the early days of television, it was thought that live coverage of news events would be extremely rare. Instead, live coverage has become pervasive. Results from this study showed that stations in sampled-markets aired more stories containing a live element than they aired standard reporter packages. Most of the time, there was no apparent journalistic justification for going live, adding evidence to the contention that technology drives journ…

  • A Descriptive Analysis of NBC’s Coverage of the Centennial Olympics

Open Access•C A Tuggle, Alex Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Social Issues•1999•Cited by: 29•References: 5

This study examines the amount of coverage given to women’s events and female athletes by NBC at the Centennial Olympic Games. Content analysis showed that women were covered extensively, but that coverage of women concentrated on individual sports such as swimming, diving, and gymnastics to the exclusion of team events. Men’s team competitions received substantially more coverage than did women’s team events, and women in sports that involved po…
