Local government intervention in tourism-driven rural gentrification
Residents’ attitudes toward land lease for rural tourism
Residents' attitudes toward land lease are a crucial factor in the success of tourism development, especially in developing countries like China, where land lease has emerged as a significant means for developers to obtain rural land for tourism purposes. Nevertheless, the absence of longitudinal field research, which could offer more profound insights into residents' attitudes compared to cross-sectional studies, contributes to the persistent "a…
Scale development for measuring displacement in rural tourism gentrification
Displacement plays a central role in the gentrification process, but reliable instruments to measure the extent of gentrification-induced displacement from the perspective of resident perception have been scarce. Against the broader backdrops of frequent urban-rural interactions, securing community residents' endorsement emerges as a pivotal avenue for advancing local development projects, exemplified by rural tourism development. Thus, this stud…
Tourist ethnocentrism and tourism intentions during a political crisis
In the context of a worldwide resurgence of ethnocentrism, understanding the effect of tourist ethnocentrism on tourism intentions is important for the sustainable development of tourism. This study of tourism intentions is centred on the recent social unrest in Hong Kong, which has aroused the ethnocentrism of mainland Chinese tourists. A conceptual model is constructed, comprising positive and negative tourist ethnocentrism, tourists’ perceptio…

This paper describes a modification of the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework (SLF) and reports the effects of culture on the sustainable livelihoods of households in a typical rural tourist site in Wuyuan county, Jiangxi province, China. Different from the previous studies, this paper highlights the role of cultural factors in households’ sustainable livelihoods. The modified SLF can be used as a possible theoretical model to comprehensively char…
Is the domestic tourism cycle synchronized with the economic cycle? Evidence from Mainland China and Taiwan
This study describes the linkage relationships between the economic cycle and the domestic tourism cycle in Mainland China and Taiwan. The Markov-switching vector autoregressive (MS-VAR) model is used to test the relationship between periodic variables. The results show that the domestic tourism cycle and the economic cycle of Mainland China have a reverse fluctuating trend and that in Taiwan, the domestic tourism cycle is synchronized with the e…
Evaluating the Total Factor Productivity Growth of National Parks in China with Data Enveloped Analysis
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the total factor productivity (TFP) growth of national parks in China. The method of Malmquist Productivity Index based on data enveloped analysis is used. The result shows that 58.33% of national parks in China improved their TFP, and their mean score reached 3.42 in 2001–2005. When the decompositions are considered, 90.28% of them decreased their efficiency and 98.59% of them increased their technology. Corr…
