Demystifying Symbiotic Rationality in Tourism SMEs
There is a high degree of interdependence between tourism small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and natural resources and between tourism SMEs themselves, necessitating a symbiotic rationality to guide them toward more sustainable practices. Current rational perspectives—instrumental rationality and value rationality—due to their inherently conflicting nature, are inadequate to fundamentally address these inherent symbiotic relationships. Th…
Failure to morally self-regulate
This study extends current research on cross-contextual inconsistencies in pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) intentions. We compare the mechanisms influencing PEB intentions in tourism and post-visit home contexts. We find that moral obligation, moral disengagement, and perceived anonymity are consistently linked with PEB intentions in both contexts, but public self-awareness has a substantial impact on PEB intentions only during travel. While publi…
How to inspire green creativity among Gen Z hotel employees
Green creativity (GC) serves as the cornerstone in driving green innovation. However, GC is the result of individual ideas, so motivating Gen Z employees, who are the primary employees to propose novel and practical environmental protection solutions, will in large part determine the future of hotel management. Drawing from social information processing theory and the componential model of creativity, this paper incorporates the variables of pros…
Shame or Pride? The Effect of Emotional Appeals on Overordering Intentions in Social Dining
Food waste is a significant global issue in which the hospitality industry plays an increasingly important role. In behavioral economics, emotions can serve as interventions to promote sustainable customer behavior. However, the effectiveness of self-conscious emotions, such as shame and pride, in reducing food waste in social dining contexts remains uncertain. Using the cognitive appraisal theory of emotion, we examine how shame and pride appeal…
Accounting for tourism carbon emissions
Limitations in statistical data and differences in accounting methods have hindered the accuracy of tourism carbon emissions accounting. In this research, based on the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) and underpinned by the logic of “accounting basis–key coefficient–accounting objective,” a comprehensive decomposition accounting method is built from a consumption stripping perspective. First, it classifies the tourism industry by the “sector–indus…
Psychosocial Impacts of Mobile Game on K12 Students and Trend Exploration for Future Educational Mobile Games
Due to the popularity and advancement of 4G/5G networks, mobile games have already currently become profitable tools for major internet platforms. These games are even refined to cover almost all age groups of the population rather than the young people. Yet in the perception of the public, mobile games have always seemed to be associated with various derogatory terms such as interfering with learning, addiction, and violence. K12 students usuall…

Tourists’ Pro-environmental Behaviors
We study the formation of pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) by integrating both the promoting (moral obligation) and inhibiting (moral disengagement) PEB mechanisms. Results of a sample of 285 tourists at a National Nature Reserve in China affirm that moral obligation positively affects PEB intention, while moral disengagement has significant negative impact. There is little difference in the relative importance of moral obligation and moral dis…

Chronic Regulatory Focus and Work-Family Conflict among Chinese Workers
Survey data from 226 service employees were used to test the hypothesized moderating role of chronic self-regulatory focus on the relationships between work-family conflict (WFC) and challenge/hindrance strain. A follow-up scenario-based experiment (N = 93 executives) confirmed the results of the hypothesized model. Results from the two studies together demonstrated the moderating role of self-regulatory processes: chronic promotion-focused indiv…
Rethinking travel life cycle with travel career patterns
On the basis of previous life cycle literature, this study aims to further deliberate over the concept of travel life cycle (TLC) by integrating Pearce’s travel career pattern (TCP) theory. Links between TLC and TCP are investigated by determining the differences between the age and income groups. Results of four-year annual tourist surveys among 21,972 participants corroborate that TLC cannot be equated to family life cycle and be simply categor…
