  • The Failure of a Religious Reform

    Open Access•Edward Dąbrowa•ARTICLE•Electrum•2026

One of the most significant moments of the so-called Hellenistic reform in Jerusalem was the introduction of polytheistic worship into the Jerusalem temple around 168 BCE. This led to the repression and persecution of Judaism’s followers, which, according to the accounts of 1 and 2 Maccabees, became the direct cause of the Maccabean revolt. Today, the role of religious aspects in the origins of the Maccabean revolt is often downplayed in favor of…

  • Antigonus Mattathias

    Open Access•Edward Dąbrowa•ARTICLE•Electrum•2026

The portrayal of Antigonus Mattathias’s reign, the last king of the Hasmonean dynasty (40–37 BCE) we owe exclusively to Josephus, who devoted him a considerable place in both of his works. Despite family ties with the Hasmoneans and favorable inclinations towards them, Josephus depicted the last king as a warmonger who would not hesitate to seek help from the Parthians and corrupt Roman commanders. The battles fought by Antigonus with Herod cause…

  • Tacitus on the Parthians

    Open Access•Edward Dąbrowa•ARTICLE•Electrum•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Tacitus is the only Roman historian who devoted his works to such an extent to Rome's eastern neighbor -the Parthian Empire. Scholars have researched the problem of Tacitus' attitude towards the Parthians on many occasions. It seems that what is the most important question is not Tacitus' opinion, but the perspective from which he looked at this topic combined with the source he used when describing the Parthians and their history. Another intere…
