  • Plural nouns in contact

Open Access•Mauro A Fernández, Eeva Sippola•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•2025

In Chabacano, certain words from the lexifier language Spanish have been adopted in their plural-derived form, although their number is singular. These invariable plural forms can also be found in Philippine languages as Spanish loanwords, without the plural marker that is common for these languages. This article presents an inventory of the invariable plural words in Chabacano and offers a detailed analysis of their semantics. The results are us…

  • The Subversion of Dialects

Open Access•Montserrat Recalde, Mauro Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2024•References: 44

The gheada and the seseo are the two pronunciations most stigmatised by the top-down standardising tradition of Galician from the mid-19th century. Social stereotypes of peasantry, ignorance, and vulgarity were built on them. Nowadays, those stereotypes are the basis for indexical pointing. These pronunciations were outlawed from schools in the past. Today, despite having been considered standard by The Royal Galician Academy since 1982, they are…

  • Sin noticias del chabacano

Open Access•Mauro Fernández, Mauro A Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Spanish in Context•2022

    Mauro A Fernández•CHAPTER•Dialectología Hispánica / the…•2022

  • The lexicon and creole formation

Open Access•Mauro A Fernández, Eeva Sippola•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•2022

There is disagreement as to the formation period of Chabacano, Philippine Creole Spanish. This article examines lexical items that have been claimed to stem from an early period of formation of Chabacano ( Jacobs & Parkvall 2020 ). As a response to these claims, we show with ample dialectological and diachronic evidence that Chabacano items ansina ‘this way, like this,’ endenantes ‘a little while ago’, onde ‘where,’ and vos ‘2 sg ’ are compatible…

  • Hacia una ortografía para el chabacano zamboangueño

Eduardo Tobar Delgado, Mauro Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

  • A new window into the history of Chabacano

    Mauro A Fernández, Eeva Sippola•ARTICLE•Journal of Pidgin and Creole…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Theories about the origin of the Spanish-lexified creoles of the Philippines known as Chabacano have been based on scarce historical samples. This article presents two early Chabacano texts that are more than twenty years older than the ones that have been available so far: ‘ La Buyera ’, from 1859, and ‘ Juancho ’, from 1860. Based on a comparison with historical and contemporary sources pertaining to Philippine-Spanish contact varieties, the te…

  • Cuando los hablantes se niegan a elegir

    Mauro A Fernández•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The lack of familiarity of sociolinguistics with social theory, leads to use indifferently, as if they were transparent and univocal, items that present problems since the beginning of their use as technical items. This is the case of the term identity. From the modern perspective, theories on identity, formulated by social sciences, can be ascribed to two main groups: essentialists and constructionists. The perspective of this paper belongs to t…

  • Las primeras propuestas de 'Selección de Norma' para el gallego

    Mauro Fernández, Mauro A Fernández•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Linguistic sttudies of Galician began in the last third of the 18th century with Father Martín Sarmiento (1695-1772). Since the tradition of writing in this language had been interrupted towards the end of the 15th century, its later recovery required certain decisions on what the model for 'good Galician' would be as well as on the norm for the writing system. In this article, I will explore the various destinies of the available options: (1) th…

  • Los Origenes del término diglosia

    Mauro Fernández, Mauro A Fernández•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 16

This article reviews the history of the term 'diglossia', particularly from its first documented use by Rhoidis in 1885 to refer to the Greek linguistic situation, to Ferguson's 1959 landmark article, in order to reveal its origin and process of circulation. The few authors who have dealt with the pre-Ferguson history of the term 'diglossia' depict it as a small series of isolated, sparsely scattered, barely connected occurrences. Contrary to thi…
