Koidula kirjad
Klassikute kirjavahetused on igas rahvuskultuuris olnud loomulik uurimis- ja publitseerimisobjekt. Kreutzwaldi kirjavahetused on Eestis välja antud kuues köites (aastatel 1953–1979); Otto Wilhelm Masingu kirjad Johann Heinrich Rosenplänterile neljas osas (1995–1997); Tuglaselt on eraldi raamatuna välja antud kirjavahetused abikaasa Elo Tuglasega („Kirjad teineteisele”, 2001), noorusaja kaasvõitleja Johannes Aavikuga („Kultuurilugu kirjapeeglis”, …
Kolm kongressi
KOMME PIDADA KONGRESSE Kirjanike kongress ei ole iseenesest nõukogulik nähtus, aga viis, kuidas neid Eesti NSV-s peeti, on läbi nõukogude aja olnud üsna spetsiifiline, st nõukogulik. Samamoodi peeti ka kunstnike, heliloojate, kolhoosnike jne kongresse. Viimane, IX kirjanike kongress Eesti NSV-s toimus 1986. aasta aprilli lõpus, just neil soojadel kevadpäevadel, kui üles lendas radioaktiivne pilv Tšernobõlis. [...]
The centre and periphery of Estonian exile literature
This article focuses on how and why the centre and periphery of Estonian exile literature were formed. The centre developed in Sweden with the founding of the Estonian Writers’ Union Abroad in 1945 in Stockholm, and the Estonian Writers’ Cooperative in 1951 in Lund. Exile literature with the most enduring artistic merit was published in this Lund-Stockholm axis. The Writers’ Cooperative was a well-managed publishing house that took into account r…
Taistolased – kas sinisilmsed idealistid või ortodokssed stalinistid? The Taistoists – Blue-Eyed Idealists or Orthodox Stalinists
The Republic of Finland’s situation during the second half of the 20th century was unique. The nation which had been on the losing side in the Second World War became strongly dependent on the victor state, the Soviet Union. The situation which resulted from this gained the name ’Finlandisation’ outside of Finland; on the one hand it meant the abandonment of sovereignity in foreign policies in return for the right to preserve the nation’s domesti…

Noor-Eesti rollist eesti kirjandus- ja kultuuriloos. The Role of Young Estonia in Estonian Literary and Cultural History
From the beginning of the 20th century on, the activities of the Young Estonia literary movement have had a significant influence on the development of Estonian culture. The group published five Young Estonia albums (1905–1915), the magazine Young Estonia, devoted to science, literature, and the arts (1910– 1911), and the newspaper Vaba Sõna (1914–1916, Free Word). The core of the group was composed of five or six active writers who maintained li…
