    This study explores how two eighteenth-century German translations and a French one deal with the foreign-language passages of Laurence Sterne’s novel Tristram Shandy. The results show that the German translations generally preserve Latin, French, Greek and Italian passages and do not add intratextual translations to support the readers’ understanding.     Our study maps the practices of managing Latin in English texts from over a thousand years. Mediation is a communicative activity which involves explaining the content of a conversation or text to another person.     This article discusses the multilingual practices identified in the public and private writings of Laurence Sterne, novelist and clergyman. The data used consists of Sterne’s two novels as well as a selection of his personal correspondence. Sterne uses a wide variety of languages in his texts, although the most common ones are French and Latin, the languages he seems to have been most fluent in.
