  • Vladimir Iurinets–A Forgotten Marxist Critic of Husserl

    Vesa Oittinen, Веса Ойттинен•ARTICLE•Marxism & Sciences•2025

In this paper, I will shortly present a hitherto quite forgotten Soviet Marxist critic of the 1920s, Vladimir Iurinets (, in Ukrainian , 1891(, in Ukrainian , -1936/37)/37).Of Ukrainian origin, he subsequently became one of the numerous victims of Stalinism and of his production only some articles remain.Although my presentation of him is only a first approach, his work and especially his evaluation of the problematic points of Husserl's philosop…

  • Aleksandr Bogdanov and Lenin on “Things-In-Themselves”

    Open Access•Vesa Oittinen, Веса Ойттинен•ARTICLE•Cultural Science Journal•2021

Questions on the theory of cognition formed one of the focal points in the dispute between orthodox Russian Marxists and Aleksandr Bogdanov and his followers. Bogdanov was an adherent of Mach’s theory, which abandoned Kant’s concept of “things-in-themselves” ( Ding an sich ) outside the cognizing subject. According to Mach and Bogdanov, there is no need to duplicate human experience in appearances given in the senses and things behind these appea…

  • Vygotsky and Spinoza

    Open Access•Веса Ойттинен•ARTICLE•Studies in East European Thought•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The article analyzes Lev Vygotsky’s attempts to utilize Spinoza’s philosophical ideas in solving the methodological crisis of psychology in the 1920s and 1930s. Vygotsky had a manuscript, Uchenie ob emocijakh , where he scrutinized the doctrines of the effects on Descartes and Spinoza. Whilst Descartes’ doctrine built on a dualistic soul versus body premise, Spinoza’s starting point was monistic. Despite his clear sympathies for Spinoza’s solutio…

  • Ontologism in Soviet Philosophy

    Open Access•Веса Ойттинен•ARTICLE•Studies in East European Thought•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 2

This paper deals with the ontological foundations of the Soviet interpretation of dialectical materialism (Diamat) as exemplified by one of its “founding fathers,” Abram Deborin, in his works of the late 1920s. It has been claimed that the “ontologizing” tendency in Soviet philosophy is due to the influence of Friedrich Engels and his ideas pertaining to the dialectics of nature. However, a more plausible interpretation is that the ontologism of …

  • When Diderot Met Catherine

    Open Access•Vesa Oittinen, Веса Ойттинен•ARTICLE•Transcultural Studies•2018

The paper deals with the meeting of Catherine ii and Denis Diderot in 1773–1774, which is interpreted as an archetypal event of the clash of Western Enlightenment with a country on the periphery of Western civilisation. Diderot was one of the few Enlightenment thinkers who saw the problems associated with the globalisation of Enlightenment ideas and practices. The problem of “enlightened despotism” is discussed; the suggestion is that it foreshad…

  • On the Legacy of the International Working Men's Association after 150 Years

Vesa Oittinen, Веса Ойттинен et al.•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2015

The International Working Men's Association (IWMA), nowadays better known as the First International, was founded in London in September 1864. Despite the importance of the event, there has not been much attention to its 150th anniversary. To an extent, this reflects the situation of the present day, with the hegemony of neoliberal politics and, conversely, the weakness of the left, that does not seem to be interested in its own history and the l…

Alex Levant, Vesa Oittinen et al.•BOOK•Dialectics of the Ideal•2014

In Dialectics of the Ideal: Evald Ilyenkov and Creative Soviet Marxism Levant and Oittinen provide a window into the subterranean tradition of ‘creative’ Soviet Marxism, which developed on the margins of the Soviet academe and remains largely outside the orbit of contemporary theory in the West. With his ‘activity approach’, E.V. Ilyenkov, its principal figure in the post-Stalin period, makes a substantial contribution toward an anti-reductionist…
