Change laboratory as a tool to address moral-ethical tensions in the work of early childhood education professionals
Our study contributes to research on moral-ethical tensions in the work of early childhood educators by applying cultural-historical activity theory, and Change Laboratory (CL) intervention. We argue that studying and resolving moral-ethical tensions cannot be done without addressing the underlying contradictions which pertain to particular cultural-historical context and local practices. This requires a shift of focus from individual educators’ …
Teacher Agency and Futures Thinking
Problems encountered in top-down school reforms have repeatedly highlighted the significance of teachers’ agency in educational change. At the same time, temporality has been identified as a key element in teachers’ agency, with teachers’ beliefs about the future and experiences of the past shaping their agentic orientations. However, research on teachers’ future orientations is typically limited to short-term trajectories, as opposed to long-ter…
“Failure is just another try”
In an era of high-stakes testing and performance demands that regulate future educational opportunities and affect how schools are managed and funded, failure can easily become stigmatized in the practices of schooling. In turn, it can lead students to avoid activities in which they can be evaluated as failing. As researchers, if we wish to help students recognize the value of failure in the process of learning and to capitalize on failures as si…
Theorizing Research Ethics for the Study of Psychological Phenomena from Within Relational Everyday Life
How to investigate psychologically relevant phenomena in the most ethical ways possible is an enduring question for researchers not only in psychology but also in adjacent fields that study human subjectivity. Once acknowledging that both researchers and the people whose lives they want to study are human beings acting in a common world, also inhabited by non-human beings, the relationship between researchers and participants touches upon fundame…
Sense of agency and everyday life
Dealing with the contradiction of agency and control during dialogic teaching
The dialectics of agency in educational ethnography
This paper outlines a dialectical conceptualisation of children’s agency for the purposes of multidisciplinary educational theory and practice. We illuminate five contradictory but connected dimensions of children’s agency, or the dialectics of agency, identified from theoretical debate between sociologically and psychologically oriented educational literature: Agency (1) as enacted and imagined; (2) as situatively emergent and progressively deve…
Visual tools as mediational means
In this study, we investigated how Finnish children used photographs and drawings to discuss their preschool day experiences in focus groups. Building on sociocultural perspectives on mediated action, we specifically focused on how these visual tools were used as mediational means in sharing experiences. The results of our embodied interaction analysis highlight the relevance of visual tools for the participants and the task at hand in the moment…
