  • Man, vegetation and climate during the Holocene in the territory of Sagalassos, Western Taurus Mountains, SW Turkey

  • Late second–early first millennium BC abrupt climate changes in coastal Syria and their possible significance for the history of the Eastern Mediterranean

Open Access•David Kaniewski, Étienne Paulissen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

The alluvial deposits near Gibala-Tell Tweini provide a unique record of environmental history and food availability estimates covering the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. The refined pollen-derived climatic proxy suggests that drier climatic conditions occurred in the Mediterranean belt of Syria from the late 13th/early 12th centuries BC to the 9th century BC. This period corresponds with the time frame of the Late Bronze Age collapse an…

  • Medieval coastal Syrian vegetation patterns in the principality of Antioch

    Open Access•David Kaniewski, E Van Campo et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Citada por: 3•Referências: 9

The coastal area of Jableh, in the vicinity of the Saladin and Al-Marquab castles, is a fertile alluvial plain located on the northwestern part of Syria, in what was once the crusader Principality of Antioch. In order to detail the coastal environment during the crusader period in the Middle East, palynological analyses have been conducted on the underlying coastal-alluvial deposits. The recovered sediments represent a continuous record of the en…

  • Wild or cultivated Olea europaea L. in the eastern Mediterranean during the middle—late Holocene? A pollen-numerical approach

    Open Access•David Kaniewski, Étienne Paulissen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2009•Citada por: 2•Referências: 11

Assessment of the wild or cultivated origin of Olea europaea L. during the middle to late Holocene according to pollen analyses is of palaeoecological and evolutionary interest as olive is thought to be one of the earliest cultivated trees and is still one of the most important fruit trees of the eastern Mediterranean. This paper considers data from the Bronze—Iron Age harbour-town, Tell Tweini, of the Ugarit Kingdom, in the Syrian coastal lowlan…

  • Late Holocene fire impact and post-fire regeneration from the Bereket Basin, Taurus Mountains, southwest Turkey

Open Access•David Kaniewski, Étienne Paulissen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

The 800 cm long sequence from the Bereket provides the first detailed fire history in the western Taurus Mountains for the last three millennia. The main disturbances occurred during the Beyşehir Occupation Phase (BO Phase), a period of intensive polyculture and dated at Bereket from ca. 2230 to 1550 cal yr BP. Four phases of local and extra-local fire periods have been recorded at 2320–2240, 1985–1970, 1865–1820 cal yr BP and post-AD 1950. The f…

  • Pollen sequences from the city of Sagalassos (Pisidia, southwest Turkey)

    Open Access•Marleen Vermoere, Simon Six et al.•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•2003•Referências: 13

Two pollen sequences from the Classical city of Sagalassos (Pisidia, southwest Turkey) show that the hills just north of the city were forested during the main occupation period of the city (late Hellenistic to early Byzantine). They demonstrate that there was a mixed needle-leaved forest of Pinus, Cedrus libani and Abies cilicica . The platform on which the city sat was already deforested, as is indicated by the presence of pollen from various l…

  • Palynological evidence for late-Holocene human occupation recorded in two wetlands in SW Turkey

    Open Access•Marleen Vermoere, Sytze Bottema et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 14•Referências: 8

Pollen diagrams from mountain lakes and marshes in SW Turkey show evidence of intensive anthro pogenic influence in the landscape between 3500 and 1300 BP. Three cores from within the territory of the classical city Sagalassos (Western Taurus, Pisidia) were palynologically analysed to make a reconstruction of the past vegetation in the territory of Sagalassos and to estimate the impact of its inhabitants on the landscape in Pisidia. Two cores ori…

  • Late Holocene Environmental Change and the Record of Human Impact at Gravgaz near Sagalassos, Southwest Turkey

  • A Middle Palaeolithic burial of a modern human at Taramsa Hill, Egypt

    Open Access•P M Vermeersch, Pierre Vermeersch et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1998•Citada por: 63•Referências: 9

Discussion about a possible African origin of modern humans is hampered by the lack of Late Pleistocene skeletal material from the Nile valley, the likely passage-way from East Africa to Asia and Europe. Here we report the discovery of a burial of an anatomically modern child from southern Egypt. Its clear relation with Middle Palaeolithic chert extraction activities and a series of OSL dates, from correlative aeolian sands, suggests an age betwe…
