The lower paleolithic landscape of 'Ayoun Qedim, al‐Jafr Basin, Jordan
The 'Ayoun Qedim locality includes seven deflated Acheulian sites within and around a limestone box canyon, Juwit el Ghuweir, in the northern al‐Jafr Basin, Jordan. Survey of these sites identified dense scatters of Acheulian bifaces ( _ 1650) along with debris, cores, and reduction material from their production and maintenance. From Flint Mine to Fan Scraper
Reported here is the discovery of an enormous industry for the production of cortical flake blanks in the el-Jafr Basin of southeastern Jordan. The industry is believed to have supplied the blanks for production of fan scrapers (tabular scrapers, cortical flake knives, etc.) perhaps as early as the Chalcolithic and during the Early Bronze Age. The 79 recorded sites include large quarries over 12 ha in area, and three trench mines. The sites also …
Evolution and Economic Significance of Naviform Core-and-Blade Technology in the Southern Levant
A review of Levantine prehistory from the Epipaleolithic through the Pottery Neolithic demonstrates that naviform core-and-blade technology developed as a specialized craft in the context of the flourishing Pre-Pottery Neolithic village economy. A technological analysis reveals that the craft permitted the systematic production of standardized blade blanks to meet the specific tool needs of the Neolithic communities. New information on the faunal remains from 'Ain Ghazal is presented. Material from the LPPNB period, although the sample is small, indicates that the residents at the site responded to a culturally degraded environment by increasing their reliance on domesticated ovicaprids in the latter half of the 7th millennium ВС
