Towards a framework for the incremental optimization of an age-at-death assessment using the macroscopic examination of the auricular surface of the ilium
Background: A macroscopic assessment of morphological changes to the auricular surface of the ilium is one of the most widely used methods for determining age‐at‐death in osteoarchaeology. A few variants that have been developed so far have received a mixed response, with questions being raised about their accuracy and the too narrow age‐at‐death intervals. While most methods propose a visual assessment of the entire auricular surface at once, th…
Assessing Mobility Among Inferred Elites Interred in Crypts 1–3 on Kom H at Tungul (Old Dongola), Sudan
As the capital of Makuria, Tungul was a major sociopolitical center within medieval Nubia, being the seat of a bishopric and a monastic community. During the excavation of the Kom H monastery, three burial crypts (Crypts 1–3) were uncovered. The identification of the epitaph of archbishop Georgios and the location of these crypts in association with the monastery suggests that the crypts may have been utilized by select individuals, possibly eccl…
A question of burial chronology
As the capital of medieval Makuria, Old Dongola, Sudan was one of the largest sites in the region and a center of religious and cultural importance. The annex to the monastery on Kom H at Old Dongola, functioning from the 6/7th through 14/15th c. CE, contains three distinct burial crypts that have been proposed as having been utilized for the burials of social elites, quite likely Makurian Church or monastic officials. Each crypt contains multipl…
A formalized approach to choosing the best methods for reconstructing stature in the case of poorly preserved skeletal series
Stature, as the universal measure of the well‐being of a population, is one of the three basic characteristics, besides sex and age, of every osteological analysis. Reconstructing living stature using the length of long bones and linear regression is the method of choice, especially in the case of poorly preserved human skeletal material obtained from archaeological excavations. Although the choice of the best formulae is usually based on intuiti…
Kom el-Dikka 2014
Archaeological excavations of the medieval Islamic burial ground in the northern part of area U on the Kom el-Dikka site in Egyptian Alexandria, carried out from 2012 to 2014, yielded a total of 98 graves. Of these, 75 contained human skeletal remains. The minimum number of individuals (MNI) was 156. The article presents preliminary studies on this sample. The scope of the investigation was limited, however, owing to the poor state of preservatio…
Dongola. Seasons in 2012–2013/ Appendix
The four seasons, two in 2012 and two in 2013, carried out in ancient Dongola by an expedition from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, were devoted to continuing excavations in a number of areas: the fortifications on the Citadel and houses from the Funj period (17th–18th century) outside of the fortifications; site SWN on the Citadel, including Building B.I (Palace of Ioannes) and Building B.V (church); and the…
Crypt 3 in the Northwest Annex of the Monastery on Kom H in Dongola
Archaeological exploration of Crypt 3 in the commemorative burial complex in the Northwest Annex of the Monastery on Kom H in Dongola in 2012 completed the process of investigation of the three crypts, discovered in the mid-1990s but not fully excavated at the time. Crypt 3, built together with Crypt 2, hosted remains of five individuals. Remains of textiles and grave furnishings were also discovered, among them an oil lamp and part of a broken a…
