Spatial Factors Related to Occupants’ Behavioral Beliefs About Window and Blind Use in Multifamily Residential Buildings
Occupant behavior is one of the factors that impact the buildings’ energy consumption. Occupants interact with building systems to adjust their indoor environmental conditions to meet their comfort levels. Occupants’ behavior to control those multiple conditions have been studied in isolation. Previous research highlighted the impact that contextual factors, such as interior design, have on occupants’ energy-related behaviors. This study focused …
Rural climate resilience through built-environment interventions
The public health impacts of climate change, and how they can be addressed through implementable built-environment interventions in non-agricultural-based rural communities, is an understudied area in the academic literature and adaptation planning practice, particularly in the United States. This paper addresses this gap in understanding through a pilot project that developed a climate and health-adaptation plan with Marquette County, a geograph…
Emerging themes on aging in place from low-income older renters
This phenomenological study focused on low-income older renters‘ challenges that affected their aging in place. We conducted 25 in-depth interviews with low-income older renters, using a semi-structured questionnaire. The questions focused on socio-demographic characteristics, renting profiles, most and least favored aspects about being a renter, and future plans and challenges. We transcribed qualitative data, employed keyword-in-context analysi…
Zero-energy home development in Korea
Zero-energy houses, one of the progressive types of energy-efficient homes, theoretically consume no energy for heating, cooling, or other daily activities. The purposes of this research were to identify representative experimental housing projects in South Korea and analyze their major features in terms of energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. This study used case studies consisting of two zero-energy experimental houses and one occu…

Influence of New Urbanist Design Features on Sense of Community
This study explored the influence of new urbanist design features on sense of community (SOC) in a new urbanist community in Michigan as a case study. Using a quantitative survey method, online surveys were utilized to procure data. A total of 136 surveys were collected and analyzed using multiple regression, one-way ANOVA and independent-sample t-test analyses. The variables investigated within this study were derived from the theoretical founda…
Place Attachment to Home Environments
This study explored the place attachment of college students to their home environments, suggesting valid factors and variables to explain their place attachment, and identify place attachment characteristics in two student groups with different housing backgrounds and conditions. The major data collection method for this survey was through a questionnaire. This study uses two data sets, one from the U.S. consisting of 352 college students’ respo…
Contemporary Kitchen Design in Urban Multifamily Housing in Korea
Since the first modern multifamily housing appeared in Korea during the 1960s, kitchens and their associated dining spaces have experienced tremendous changes. Before this time the kitchen primarily functioned as a space for cooking-related activities. However, Korean society has continuously developed during the past four decades and kitchen design has evolved to meet new consumer demands and accommodate a growing number of activities. The purpo…
The Community Networks Center and Social Support in Multifamily Low-Income Communities
As contemporary society has moved into the digital age, community centers on housing estates throughout the world have begun to evolve to computer-based learning centers. This facility is now becoming prevalent globally, and accordingly there are neighborhood networks centers in the U.S. Similar community networks centers have been designed in subsidized multifamily housing communities in Korea since 2001, based on the recommendation of the Korea…
