Commercial and industrial land conversion in Germany
In numerous Western countries, there has been a notable trend of commercial and industrial land conversion towards other uses. Scholars contend that this shift results not only from the relocation of industry to lower-cost regions, but also from neoliberal urban policies favouring residential and office development at the expense of traditional employment lands. Germany offers a compelling case study in this regard, as its major cities have under…
Mixed-use ideals, market pressures, and the marginalization of crafts in contemporary urban development
This paper examines the displacement of craft businesses from inner-city areas in five cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Drawing on expert interviews with representatives from urban planning, economic development, and chambers of crafts, it identifies a complex interplay of highly context-related factors driving this process – ranging from land-use conversion and rising property values to emission conflicts and limited expansion opportun…

The legacy of socialist central planning policy for the long-term development of cities
This paper analyses different categories of legacy from socialist central planning policies (SCPP) for urban development. How have city-specific measures by SCPP affected local economic systems, and have there been long-term consequences for cities even after their return to a market economy? Drawing from case studies of four East German cities, we identify several types of socialist policy measures that determine the local economic performance u…
Dynamics of intra-urban employment geographies
In this paper we analyze changes in the intra-urban spatial distribution of employment across six U.S. and German city regions between 2002 and 2015. Our methodological approach allows for a systematic and spatially consistent comparison of urban spatial structures across the two different countries. The empirical results show major national, regional, and sectoral differences in the spatial distribution of employment. In the German case studies …
Where do immigrants move in Germany? The role of international migration in regional disparities in population development
We examine the impact of foreign migration on regional disparities in population development in Germany by analysing spatial patterns and determinants at the county level for the period of 2007–2017. Counterfactual analyses show that international migration has been the major component of population growth across German regions. However, immigration has mainly been directed towards large cities and highly urbanised areas and has therefore reinfor…
Employment suburbanization in the 21st century
The empirical research on urban spatial structure and its evolution still lacks comprehensive, longitudinal and international comparative perspectives. At this background, this paper addresses the change of intra-metropolitan employment patterns by scrutinizing two relatively large and representative samples of German and US American city regions, covering the years between 2003 and 2015. Our analysis reveals strong differences in the spatial emp…
