  • Trade and Currency Weapons

    Open Access•Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Agnès Bénassy‐quéré et al.•ARTICLE•Review of International Economics•2018

The debate on trade and currency wars has reemerged since the Global Financial Crisis. We study the two forms of noncooperative policies within a single framework. First, we compare the elasticity of trade flows to import tariffs and to the real exchange rate, based on product‐level data for 110 countries over the 1989–2013 period. We find that a 1% depreciation of the importer's currency reduces imports by around 0.5% in current dollar, whereas …

  • Rebalancing IMF Quotas

    Open Access•Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Agnès Bénassy‐quéré et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2011

In this paper, we address the issue of IMF quota calculation in several directions. We first discuss the relevance of various specifications regarding the choice of variables, the way to measure them and the potential functional forms. Then, relying on long‐run projections for GDP, trade and foreign direct investment, we compare the ‘old’ system of formulas to the new one adopted in 2008 at different time horizons until 2030. Two major results em…

  • Robust Estimations of Equilibrium Exchange Rates Within the G20: A Panel Beer Approach

    Open Access•Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Agnès Bénassy‐quéré et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This paper is concerned with the robustness of equilibrium exchange rate estimations based on the BEER approach for a set of both industrial and emerging countries. The robustness is studied in four directions, successively. First, we investigate the impact of using alternative proxies for relative productivity. Second, we analyze the impact of estimating the equilibrium equation on one single panel covering G20 countries, or separately for G7 an…

  • The ECB Governing Council in an Enlarged Euro Area

    Open Access•Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Agnès Bénassy‐quéré et al.•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 23

We study the impact of rotating votes in the ECB Governing Council after EMU enlargement, based on national and euro‐wide Taylor rules and on a convergence assumption. We find that the rotation system yields monetary policy decisions that are close both to full centralization and to a voting rule without rotations

  • Institutional Determinants of Foreign Direct Investment

    Open Access•Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Agnès Bénassy‐quéré et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2007•Cited by: 55•References: 8

In this paper, we contribute to the literature on the determinants of foreign direct investment in developing countries and re-evaluate the role of the quality of institutions on FDI independently of the general level of development. We implement cross-section estimations based on a newly available database with unprecedented detail on institutions for a set of 52 countries, as well as panel data estimations based on Fraser Institute's data. Furt…

  • On the Adequacy of Monetary Arrangements in Sub‐Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Agnès Bénassy‐quéré et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2005

We examine the economic rationale for monetary union(s) in Sub‐Saharan Africa through the use of cluster analysis on a sample of 17 countries. The variables used stem from the theory of optimum currency areas and from the fear‐of‐floating literature. It is found that the existing CFA franc zone cannot be viewed as an optimum currency area: CEMAC and UEMOA countries do not belong to the same clusters, and a ‘core’ of the UEMOA can be defined on ec…
