  • From interoperability to interpretability

Open Access•Folco Soffietti, Gianni Sinni et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

This study investigates how cartographic design influences the communicative effectiveness of Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) geoportals in Europe. While data interoperability has advanced under the MSP and INSPIRE Directives, communication interoperability remains inconsistent, limiting cross-border comprehension and stakeholder engagement. Drawing on graphic semiology and contemporary digital cartography, the paper develops a design-based analy…

  • Living with water

Open Access•Paolo De Martino, Francesco Musco et al.•ARTICLE•Planning Practice and Research•2026

This article explores the transitional spaces of Naples’ port city, proposing a shift in perspective by viewing coastal territories from the sea. It highlights how fragmented land–sea interaction spaces can become experimental grounds for circular processes and environmental infrastructures. By analyzing Naples and European port cities, it questions the current linear planning of ports and their disconnection from urban life. The article focuses …

  • Designing and implementing a multi-scalar approach to Maritime Spatial Planning

Open Access•Emiliano Ramieri, Martina Bocci et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2024

The Italian coastal and marine space includes areas with remarkable differences in terms of oceanographic characteristics, maritime uses, natural habitats, species distribution, landscape and cultural heritage. In Italy, coastal and marine management competencies are shared among national, regional, and for some aspects even local authorities. This geographic heterogeneity and governance complexity required the adoption of a multi-scalar approach…

  • Climate change adaptation mainstreaming through strategic environmental assessments. An in-depth analysis of environmental indicators from spatial plans in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (Italy)

Open Access•Massimiliano Granceri Bradaschia, D Longato et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Impact Assessment…•2024

Climate change adaptation, CCA henceforth, is nowadays a shared concern, deeply investigated and advocated by international research and political organisations. However, both CCA implementation and its monitoring and evaluation (M&E) are challenges yet to be properly addressed. From a spatial planning perspective, local plans are the land-use-oriented tools with the highest potential to enhance CCA operativity. Strategic Environmental Assessment…

  • The role of urban planning in climate adaptation

N Florenzio, Gianni Guastella et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Planning…•2023

This paper empirically analyses the relationship between urban form and Urban Heat Island (UHI) in a dataset of 523 European cities that matches remotely sensed land-use and surface temperature data. A UHI anomaly is defined as an uninterrupted streak of days where the temperature differential measured at 12.00 AM between the city core and its surroundings is higher than a given threshold. From this definition, three UHI indicators are obtained: …

  • Post-earthquake Repositioning in a High-Value Heritage Context

Open Access•Mattia Bertin, Vittore Negretto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•2021•References: 4

This paper examines how a town affected by a catastrophe can be restored by repositioning. We describe how we locally applied a method for building back better with participation. To do it, we merged some already known techniques. We learned three lessons. First, the methodology that we deployed can support a nonconflictive recovery process. Second, the building’s physical forms for the reconstruction according to the preferences of residents mus…

  • Strategy for primary prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCD) and mitigation of climate change in Italy

Open Access•Paolo Vineis, Jessica Beagley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2021•References: 17

This paper derives from a document commissioned in 2019 by the Italian Minister of Health, and outlines a general strategy for primary prevention of non-communicable diseases in Italy, with a special focus on cobenefits of climate change mitigation. Given that action against climate change is primarily taken via energy choices, limiting the use of fossil fuels and promoting renewable sources, an effective strategy is one in which interventions ar…

  • Circular Urban Metabolism Framework

    Open Access•Giulia Lucertini, Francesco Musco•ARTICLE•One Earth•2020

In our cities, the production and consumption of resources are achieved at an unsustainable rate. Combined with an increasing global population and accelerating urbanization, the absence of a new approach will almost certainly have dramatic environmental consequences. Potential solutions are emerging: the concepts of circular economy (CE) and urban metabolism (UM), which contrast the current and traditional linear extract-produce-use-dispose mode…

  • Dalle politiche energetiche alle politiche di mitigazione. Note a margine

    Francesco Musco•ARTICLE•SOCIOLOGIA URBANA E RURALE•2015
