    Open Access•Hans-Lukas Kieser, Hans‐lukas Kieser•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2022

Why did Jews contribute so substantially to the denial of the Armenian genocide for so long? Why have Jews given the Ottomans and Turks favorable press for five centuries? General readers with topical questions like these, as well as scholars interested in Jewish history writing in or on the Ottoman Empire, will be rewarded by the rich insights, thoughtfulness, and topicality of Sultanic Saviors and Tolerant Turks. Critically engaging with the po…

  • Europe's Seminal Proto-Fascist? Historically Approaching Ziya Gökalp, Mentor of Turkish Nationalism

    Hans-Lukas Kieser, Hans‐lukas Kieser•ARTICLE•Die Welt des Islams•2021•Cited by: 2

This essay considers Ziya Gökalp, the received "spiritual father of Turkish nationalism", as an early mastermind of fascism in Greater Europe. During the 1910s, Gökalp acted as a prophet of expansive war and as a mentor of demographic engineering in the Ottoman capital, Istanbul, which was a laboratory for new political styles in a crisis-ridden empire. Gökalp's thinking longed for a supreme leader in an army-like, disciplined and hierarchised so…

  • Reform or cataclysm? The agreement of 8 February 1914 regarding the Ottoman eastern provinces

    Hans-Lukas Kieser, Hans‐lukas Kieser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2015•Cited by: 1

On 8 February 1914, Ottoman Grand Vizier Said Halim and the Russian chargé d'affaires Konstantin Gulkevich signed a reform project for seven Ottoman eastern provinces that covered roughly half of Asia Minor. This international Reform Agreement differed considerably from a first Russian draft the year before. Though little known by most World War I historians in the West, this agreement was a central but fragile piece for the future of Ottoman coe…

  • Barbara Reeves-Ellington. Domestic Frontiers

    Hans-Lukas Kieser, Hans‐lukas Kieser•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2013

In Domestic Frontiers, Barbara Reeves-Ellington considers the “cultural formation of the modern Christian home” (p. 19) to be a crucial element of Protestant mission work in late Ottoman surroundings, a major factor in its impact and more influential than directly spreading the Gospel. From her perspective, domesticity was a frontier of the struggle for modern Protestant life. The photo of a missionary family with twenty-one members—in its midst,…

  • Removal of American Indians, destruction of Ottoman Armenians. American missionaries and demographic engineering

    Open Access•Hans‐lukas Kieser•ARTICLE•European journal of Turkish studies•2008•References: 1

This article describes and compares two distinct instances of removal of a people from its native land. The removals in question were organized at different times by two different states, one a rising, the other a crumbling power. The removals had different dimensions, but were both claimed to be unavoidable for state building. The same organization, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission (ABCFM), was a privileged witness and an …

    Hans-Lukas Kieser, Hans‐lukas Kieser•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 8

This article explores the complex role Protestant missionaries played in late Ottoman Asia Minor. For several generations they were important, even if today almost forgotten, actors of social and mental change. They succeeded in establishing autonomous schools, hospitals and factories not only in the capital, but also in the provinces. They had a vision of integrating minorities into an egalitarian pluralist society which was diametrically oppose…

  • Muslim Heterodoxy and Protestant Utopia. The Interactions Between Alevis and Missionaries in Ottoman Anatolia

    Hans-Lukas Kieser, Hans‐lukas Kieser•ARTICLE•Die Welt des Islams•2001•Cited by: 2

150 years ago, the utopia of the Protestant American missionaries in Turkey consisted in an almost millenarian belief in a new social and symbolic order, promoted not by a miraculous deus ex machina but by their own evangelistic, educative and civilizing efforts. Penetrating all the eastern provinces of the Ottoman Empire, the carriers of this impressive Puritan model of successful work, self-confident behavior and the socioreligious subversion o…
