The Parts, The Whole and Their Relations: Examining Wildness as a Bridging Concept Between Animal and Environmental Ethics in Chinese Food Production
Animal ethics is a big part of food ethics, as our diets on a global level consist increasingly of animals. Even though the increasing demand for animal food products is especially strong in developing countries, most of the ethical theorizing on animal ethics focuses on western practices. This paper examines moral theorizing on animal vs environmental ethics in the Chinese context. It pays special attention to the concept of “wildness” as a poss…

More-than-human practices in wild animal farming: The case of China's forest frogs
In Northeastern China, forest frog farming has emerged as an important means of livelihood diversification and rural revitalization. This study examines how forest frog breeding practices have come under pressure following the post-COVID reclassification of frogs from “terrestrial” to “aquatic” species – a move that allowed the trade of economically valuable frog species to continue despite a broader wildlife consumption ban. Drawing on fieldwork…
Correlation between symptom distress and quality of life in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5 undergoing hemodialysis in China: A multi-center cross-sectional study
Aim To explore the symptom distress and quality of life status of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Stage 5 undergoing hemodialysis in China, and their correlation. Methods The Dialysis Symptom Index (DSI) and the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form (KDQOL-SFTM 1.3), two widely used assessment tools for hemodialysis patients, were used for evaluation. Results The patients reported an average of 13 symptoms. The most common symptoms…

Dysfunctional sleep beliefs and sleep quality among Chinese university students: The mediating roles of depression, anxiety, and stress
DBAS has a direct negative impact on sleep quality and affects it indirectly through the parallel mediation of anxiety and stress. Additionally, DBAS may indirectly influence sleep quality through the chain-mediating effects of anxiety and stress. The study highlights the significance of addressing DBAS, as it directly affects students' emotional well-being and sleep quality. Future research should concentrate on creating targeted interventions t…
China’s nature-based solutions in the Global South: Evidence from Asia, Africa, and Latin America
China increasingly engages in environmental diplomacy through South-South cooperation across the developing world. Since 2019, the rise of the discourse of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) within this cooperation has been exponential. Coined just over ten years ago, NbS refers to the underexplored potential of leveraging the natural world to address socio-environmental challenges. The concept finds particular resonance in China, where it demonstrates…
The Semantic Field of 性 in Ming Neo-Confucianism: Engaging Chinese Philosophy through Schleiermacher’s Hermeneutics

Ecological Civilization in the making: The ‘construction’ of China’s climate-forestry nexus
In the Anthropocene, debates about global climate risks have taken carbon as a measure of policy success, with land-based mitigation strategies like afforestation receiving particular scrutiny. While scientists and policymakers discuss forestry as a potential climate solution, China has been implementing massive forestry projects for decades, drastically transforming environments under the Ecological Civilization framework. This article showcases…
Relationship between Photosynthetic Capacity and Microcystin Production in Toxic Microcystis Aeruginosa under Different Iron Regimes
Blooms of harmful cyanobacteria have been observed in various water bodies across the world and some of them can produce intracellular toxins, such as microcystins (MCs), which negatively impact aquatic organisms and human health. Iron participates significantly in cyanobacterial photosynthesis and is proposed to be linked to MC production. Here, the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa was cultivated under different iron regimes to investigate t…
