African American Fathers as a Solution to the Maternal Health Crisis
The research is limited to the role of African American (AA) fathers in maternal health. African American fathers are largely not included in perinatal care, and their contribution may be essential in addressing the Black maternal health disparity crisis. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to examine the evidence of African American fathers involvement in supporting maternal health during the perinatal period. This conceptual paper will summ…
The Virtual CTSA Visiting Scholar Program to Support Early-Stage Clinical and Translational Researchers
In addition to restrictions on conducting research, COVID-19-related travel bans and scientific meeting cancellations have negatively affected scholars in the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Mentored Career Development Award (KL2) program. In response, a national virtual visiting scholar program was developed to provide opportunity for KL2 scholars to be virtual visiting professors at another CTSA hub, meet faculty and scholars, a…
A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Gender and Career Status Differences in the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Underrepresented Postdoctoral Fellows and Early-Career Faculty
PURPOSE: The lack of racial and ethnic diversity in the biomedical workforce is pronounced and those from underrepresented backgrounds encounter more challenges than their majority counterparts. The extent of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on early-career investigators from underrepresented backgrounds is not yet fully understood. To examine the impact of the pandemic on underrepresented early-career biomedical researchers, this study evalua…
Delivering What We PROMISED
Research demonstrates that mentorship can significantly improve career success, career satisfaction, and persistence for underrepresented (UR) minority faculty. However, many UR faculty members do not receive the mentorship they need, nor do mentors always possess the range of skills required to guide UR mentees through the unique challenges they face. We developed a 1-year fellowship training program, PROMISED, designed to help mentors promote c…
Challenges and Strategies of Successful Mentoring
Mentoring continues to be a salient conversation in academia among junior and senior faculty and administrators. Mentors provide guidance and structure to junior faculty so that they can meet their academic and professional goals. Mentors also convey skills in balancing life and academic pursuits. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive study was to provide additional insight from a training program called Leading Emerging and Diverse Scientis…
A Multi-Pronged Approach to Diversifying the Workforce
The biomedical workforce continues to lack diversity, despite growing evidence demonstrating the advantages of diverse teams in workplaces for creativity and innovation. At the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Clinical Research Education, we have taken a multi-pronged, collaborative approach to enhance the diversity of our trainees and scholars. We started by implementing a program for postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty, the Career Edu…
Physician Adherence to U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Mammography Guidelines
Research
Religious coping has been conceptualized as a mediator, accounting for the relationship between religiousness and mental health in times of stress, and as a moderator, altering the relationship between stressors and mental health (Pargament, 1997). Direct empirical investigations of these conceptual models, however, are few. This study examined 2 forms of religious coping in mediating and moderating roles. Collaborative religious coping, which is…
Objectifying content validity
Social scientists frequently study complex constructs. Despite plethora of measures for these constructs, researchers may need to create their own measure for a particular study. When a measure is created, psychometric testing is required, and first step is to study content validity of measure. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to conduct a content validity study, including how to elicit most from a panel of experts by collecting …
Validating a Measure Across Groups
This study tests the effects of causal indicators on the factorial invariance of a measure across groups. If a measure lacks invariance, MIMIC models (Multiple Indicators/Multiple Causes) can be used to identify the source of invariance. Using the Caregiver Well-Being Scale, two phases of multi-group modeling with post-care-givers and non-caregivers were analyzed. The first phase tested the scale's validity and reliability using multi-group model…
SocialWelfare Policy Changes and SocialWork Practice
Managed care, welfare reform, changes in government-sponsored health insurance, privatization, for-profit commercial activity, and increasing competition for charitable funding are affecting nonprofit social service organizations. This study of 244 nonprofit social service agencies explores the influence of social policy changes on nonprofit organizations. The effects of such changes on social work practice and social work field education within …
