The Two Faces of Semi-Physicalism
This paper responds to Halvorson’s reflections on hylomorphism by addressing its quantum application (Koons and Simpson) and contextually emergent physics (Ellis and Drossel). It also critiques physicalist interpretations of quantum mechanics and argues for the fundamental nature of thermodynamic phenomena. Koons, Simpson, Ellis and Drossel defend hylomorphism as a framework that challenges dogmatic semi-physicalism. They examine causal pluralism…
Mental health trajectory throughout high school football career
Our data suggest that mental health wellbeing remain consistent across 1 to 2 years of high school sports participation, regardless of head impact exposure or types of sports they play (football or non-contact sports). However, psychological burden may accumulate over multiple years of football participation
Human flourishing
This perspective article explores foundational shifts required for the conceptualization of future principles and goals to inform the starting re-negotiation process of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) post-2030. Based on a multi-stakeholder consultation and workshop-based focus groups, this article emphasizes integrating non-material aspects of human flourishing, such as cultural, psycho-social, and community-based aspects, in addition t…
A Mathematical Cosmologist Reflects on Deep Ethics
This paper argues in favour of moral realism, and hence distinguishes ethics (socially determined ideas of good and bad) from morality (eternal and unchanging standards of what is in fact good and bad). Morality cannot be determined by any argument based in scientific understandings, for it is of a completely different nature; there is no scientific test for what is good or bad, because you can’t get an “ought” from an “is”. Ethical progress resi…

Confronting the meaning of racism
In this part of the 'Forum section' of this special edition of 'Ecquid Novi' on the media and racism, a number of original short articles, as well as statements and excerpts from publications and Internet authors are published to stimulate further debate on the issue
The dimensions of poverty
The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time
Einstein's General Theory of Relativity leads to two remarkable predictions: first, that the ultimate destiny of many massive stars is to undergo gravitational collapse and to disappear from view, leaving behind a 'black hole' in space; and secondly, that there will exist singularities in space-time itself. These singularities are places where space-time begins or ends, and the presently known laws of physics break down. They will occur inside bl…
