The Macro-Level Determinants of Inbound Cross-Border Tourism in Yunnan: An Investigation of the China-Myanmar Border Region
Inbound cross-border tourism between Myanmar and Yunnan, China, has expanded steadily over the past two decades and has become an increasingly important driver of regional economic interaction and people-to-people exchange. Despite this growth, empirical research examining the determinants of cross-border tourism demand in the China–Myanmar border region remains limited. This study aims to investigate the key macro-level factors that determine ch…
Causal impact of the 2015 European refugee crisis on resident immigrants’ life satisfaction
Purpose By exploiting the exogeneity of the unexpected 2015 European refugee crisis, the paper’s purpose is to analyze the causal impact of the crisis on resident immigrants’ life satisfaction. Due to the ongoing anti-immigrant sentiments, we argue that the refugee crisis and the build-up to it affect how resident immigrants are looked upon in a negative light; this in turn could consequently be reflected in their life satisfaction. We anchor the…
Statistical identification of predictors of dropout in secondary education: Evidence from Malaysia
The issue of school dropout has been long rooted in Malaysia. To address this issue effectively, further insight into the predictors of the school dropout and the early statistical identification of dropouts are crucial. Nevertheless, uncertainty has been persistent on these two aspects. This paper aims to identify the predictors and assess the feasibility of early identification of school dropouts. Using a school administrative database that com…
Of higher salaries and superior skills: Comparing the worth of public and private university education
The paper compares the worth of public and private university education. We develop a Public–Private University Worth parity index and provide empirical estimations to lend rigour in testing our main hypothesis that the type of university education does not matter in determining salaries and skills’ value-added. Using data from a recent questionnaire survey, our proposed parity index suggests that private university graduates have higher salaries…
Estimating the superstition value: Why not decomposition analysis
Superstitious belief of the number of eight as a lucky number is common among the Malaysian Chinese as its pronunciation carries the meaning of “prosperity”. Nevertheless, for the non-Chinese (i.e. Malay) who do not believe in superstition, it is just a neutral number. The existence of the two groups provides a natural setting to use the nonlinear decomposition analysis. This innovative approach allows us to decompose the price premium of number …
Cubicles or corner offices? Effects of academic performance on university graduates’ employment likelihood and salary
This paper uses a 2016/2017 sample of 1107 freshly minted university graduates from a public and a private university in Malaysia. Against a backdrop of an institutional setting very much different from that of western countries’ and issues of high living costs and graduate unemployment, we analyse how academic performance affects graduates’ employment likelihood, salaries, and salary distribution. Using quantile estimations, we find that academi…
Income and Subjective Well-Being: A Case Study
Subjective well-being is represented by the respondent's level of happiness and life satisfaction. The outcomes show happiness and life satisfaction are affected by household income, relative income, expected income and health. Household income seems to matter more in influencing both happiness and life satisfaction as compared to relative income. Respondents are less happy and less satisfied when the gap between their actual and expected income …
Difference or not to difference an integrated time series? An empirical investigation
This paper uses the gross domestic product growth rates of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and China in an empirical examination to determine whether an integrated time series should be differenced before it is used for forecasting. The results reveal that Mallows model combination (M.M.A.) of original and differenced series is a better choice than just differencing the series only if the perturbation instability measure is more than 1.25 for autor…
