  • The impact of afterschool program attendance on academic outcomes of middle school students

    Open Access•Elizabeth L Budd, Carol T Nixon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2020•References: 18

This evaluation examined the effects of afterschool programs—supported by an afterschool system intermediary organization (ASIO)—on middle school students' academic performance and examined how those effects varied by student characteristics and program engagement. In this longitudinal, quasi‐experimental matched comparison group evaluation, propensity score matching was used to create demographically balanced samples of ASIO‐supported afterschoo…

  • When Care and Concern Are Not Enough: School Personnel's Development as Allies for Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Students

    Open Access•Robert Marx, Leah Marion Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 32

Trans people-and particularly trans youth-have come to the forefront of political and educational discussions, especially as legislation has aimed to ensure that school personnel act as enforcers of state-level policies targeting trans youth. For this reason, and because research demonstrates that youth in schools form attachments to and receive support from school personnel, our research looks at school personnel's development as allies. By anal…

  • Student Civic Participation and School Climate: Associations at Multiple Levels of the School Ecology

    Open Access•Holly L Karakos, Adam Voight et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 36

Research suggests that youth civic participation predicts desirable outcomes for engaged individuals, but less is known about the benefits of individual participation that accrue to schools as a whole. The present study investigates whether students’ individual and collective participation predict students’ perceptions of school climate. We examine survey and administrative data from 4,947 students from 11 middle schools. Using multilevel modelin…

  • An Ecological Approach to a University Course that Develops Partnerships Impacting Health and Wellness in K-12 Schools and Communities

    Sharon L Shields, Leigh Z Gilchrist et al.•ARTICLE•Peabody Journal of Education•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Over the past several decades, there has been an increased focus on health promotion as opposed to individual health determinants and disease prevention. Given the association between health and academic success, health promotion is a vastly overlooked lever for establishing effective K-12 schools. Student, organizational, and community well-being are intricately linked, and thus, focusing on any one of these alone will not eliminate achievement …

  • A Community-Based Participatory Approach to Youth Development and School Climate Change: The Alignment Enhanced Services Project

Maury Nation, Leslie Collins et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 1

AES offers a method for engaging the stakeholders in addressing critical issues related to youth development and school climate

  • The Study Habits and Attitudes Inventory and its Implications for Students' Success

    Open Access•Carol T Nixon, Alan G Frost•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1990

The purpose of this study was to construct a psychometrically sound inventory that could predict college academic success from students' study habits and attitudes. Success was measured in terms of grade point average. A 37-item inventory was constructed and twice revised by removing ineffective items after being administered to samples of 128 and 56 students. The final 31-item inventory was both reliable and valid. Strong correlations were found…
