    Beata Halicka•ARTICLE•Polish American Studies•2026

In this article, I analyze the correspondence between writer and academic Danuta Mostwin and Jerzy Giedroyc, the editor of the Paris-based monthly magazine Kultura. I trace their personal relationship and find numerous references to intellectual debates, historical disputes, and comments on current events in Poland and around the world. The correspondence, which spanned forty-five years, documents the maturation of the budding writer Danuta Mostw…

    Beata Halicka•ARTICLE•Polish American Studies•2023

This book is the biography of a remarkable woman, Maria Mia Truskier, who spent her childhood in Warsaw in a secular Jewish family rooted in Polish culture and studied architecture in Switzerland. At the age of nineteen, she was confronted with the outbreak of World War II in Poland. The Nazi occupation forced her to leave her homeland in early 1940. Denied asylum in Switzerland and elsewhere, she lived semi-clandestinely in Italy, from where she…

  • National or Multicultural? A Common Narrative about History in the Baltic States after 1991

    Open Access•Beata Halicka•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2023•Cited by: 3

I argue that dealing with history is a challenge in these countries and can be seen as part of a broader issue of memory politics in societies that have experienced trauma during the Nazi and Soviet eras. The hypothesis that I developed, based on my empirical analysis, …

  • The Oder–Neisse Line as a Place of Remembrance for Germans and Poles

    Open Access•Beata Halicka•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2014•Cited by: 1

This article takes the Oder region as an example to demonstrate the way in which memories of the Second World War and the postwar years are cultivated by residents of the region, and furthermore, how the place of remembrance of the Oder–Neisse line was encoded by Germans and Poles respectively. The Oder region saw an almost complete population exchange, which was a result of several migration processes. On both sides of the Oder–Neisse line, the …
