Using a Realist Informed Qualitative Approach to Elaborate Programme Theory
Realist approaches to complex health care evaluations are increasingly used and recommended in national evaluation guidelines. However, there remains a paucity of researcher guidance on methods for elaborating and refining programme theories throughout the stages of a realist evaluation project-from prospective theory development to feasibility work, to full evaluation. We present a step by step worked example of a realist approach to elaborating…
Engaging Stakeholders in Realist Programme Theory Building
Dementia - Personalised Care Team' (D-PACT) is a five-year NIHR funded programme, using realist methods to develop and evaluate a complex, person-centred intervention for people with dementia and their carers. During the early project stages, we engaged with multiple stakeholders, including people with dementia and their carers, to develop an initial programme theory (IPT) - into an elaborated programme theory (EPT), by helping to uncover interve…
The dynamics of decision-making in weight loss and maintenance
Our analysis and model of decision-making during weight-management have implications for the development and delivery of behavioural weight management interventions. By helping individuals to identify the drivers of their decision-making in key situations, and equipping them to manage these drivers, programmes may enhance their capacity to sustain the behaviour changes needed for long-term weight loss
An application of Extended Normalisation Process Theory in a randomised controlled trial of a complex social intervention
Extended Normalisation Process Theory provided a useful framework for assessing implementation and explaining variation by examining intervention-context interactions. Findings highlight the need for process evaluations to consider both the structural and process components of implementation to explain whether programme activities are delivered as intended and why
Policy is political; our ideas about knowledge translation must be too
This article argues that in public health research, standard approaches to knowledge translation are based on (1) an invalid model of the relationship between research knowledge and policy and (2) an oversimplified concept of ‘knowledge’. Standard approaches tend to focus primarily on communicating research knowledge to policy makers in order to increase the impact of research on policy making.1 ,2 However, the process of policy making is complex…
