The Role of Evaluator‐Victim Relationships in Children's Evaluations of Peer Provocation
Second‐, third‐, fifth‐, and sixth‐ grade children evaluated two hypothetical target peers in three provocation scenarios which differed as to the intent of a provocative act (Ambiguous, Accidental, Hostile). In addition to age and gender, evaluator‐victim relationship was manipulated with children portrayed as being in a best friend, an acquaintance, or an enemy relationship with the victim, while the agent of the provocation was an unfamiliar p…

Locus of Control and Perceived Stress among Student-Teachers
The relationship between locus of control and perceived stress was investigated. 27 student-teachers who had earlier completed measures of teaching-specific and generalized locus of control expectancies rated events relevant to student-teaching on the extent to which they were considered stressful. Analysis indicated that student-teachers who felt they could influence the teaching environment rated the events as less stressful than those who felt…
Achievement Orientations as Prototypes
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prototypical nature of achievement orientations as conceptualized by J Veroff and other theorists. Traits relevant to achievement were rated by 108 subjects who received a description of either a process or impact orientation. Analysis indicated distinct sets of traits characterizing each orientation as well as substantial agreement on the exemplars for each orientation. Moreover, traits associated…

Intercorrelations among the Slosson Intelligence Test, the Shipley-Institute of Living Scale, and the Intellectual Efficiency Scale of the California Psychological Inventory
The California Psychological Inventory (CPI), the Slosson Intelligence Test (SIT), and the Shipley-Institute of Living Scale (SILS) were administered to 43 undergraduates enrolled in psychology classes at Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, Tennessee. The Intellectual Efficiency ( Ie) scale scores were correlated .52 with the SIT scores and .39 with the SILS scores. The coefficients were significant at the .01 and .05 levels, respectively.…
Note on the Reliability and Scoring of the Chapin Social Insight Test
The Chapin Social Insight Test ( 1) was developed to measure a person's ability to recognize the psychodynamics in a particular situation and to resolve problematic situations. Although this test has been available for many years, the only assessments of its properties are those reported by Gough (2, 3). The present study was undertaken to update the information on the reliability of the Chapin cest and to assess two methods of scoring. Students …
Locus of Control and Death Anxiety
The relationship between locus of control and death anxiety was reexamined in an attempt to reconcile inconsistencies in the literature. The Reid-Ware Three Factor Locus of Control Scale and the Templer Death Anxiety Scale were administered to 164 males and 211 female college students who ranged from seventeen to forty-nine years of age. Separate regression analyses indicated that death anxiety loaded significantly on the Fatalism dimension for m…
Effects of Withheld Evidence on Juridic Decisions
The present experiment tested the hypotheses that a criminal defendant will be judged more likely guilty, more deserving of conviction, and more undesirable or unattractive as his intent to withhold evidence becomes increasingly obvious. Subject-jurors (60 male and 60 female students) read a trial transcript in which a male defendant responded to the prosecutor's questioning in one of four ways, thus providing a graded manipulation of evidence wi…
