Of Humans and Science. Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Palaeoecology and the Second Decade of Environmental Archaeology at the University of South Bohemia
The Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Palaeoecology (LAPE), of the Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice (USB) was founded twenty years ago. The department is closely linked with the Institute of Archaeology of the USB in terms of staff and projects, which are mainly focused on the issues of paleoecology, archaeobotany and archaeozoology. Динамика хозяйственного освоения Посурья в I тысячелетии н.э. Часть 1
The article summarizes the results of a comprehensive landscape-archaeological study of the dynamics of human-environmental interaction in the Middle Sura region during the first millennium AD. The data resulted from the study of the River Sura floodplain at the former confluence of the Sura and the Malaya Sarka. The analysis of the sediments and buried soils indicates that the period between the first millennium BC and the first millennium AD sa…
Modern Analog Assemblages of Phytoliths Under Various Plant Communities of the Middle Volga and their Applicability for Archaeological Reconstructions
The article describes the results of investigations of the sub-recent assemblages of silica phytoliths in top soils of various modern plant communities of the Middle Volga region in Tatarstan, Samarskaya and Ulyanovskaya oblasts conducted in 2017–2020. Counts of various phytolith morphotypes from 40 samples suggest a relatively low level of vegetation community specificity as revealed by multivariate statistical analyses. Nevertheless, coniferous…
Stratigraphy And Paleolithic Landscapes of the Beganchik Site at the Kama-Volga Confluence
The Beganchik locality is a stratigraphic sequence of loessic deposits, pedogenic horizons and Paleolithic occupations located at the Kama-Volga confluence. The sequence is exposed on a bluff formed on the west side of an erosional remnant between the Kuybyshev Reservoir and the former channel of the Aktay River. Although the site is known for its Terminal Paleolithic-Mesolithic occupations of the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, evidence of olde…
Pyre Fuel for the Cremations of the Middle of the First Millennium AD in the Middle Volga Region
The paper presents results of charcoal and macrofossil analysis of the cremation burial grounds of the Imenkovo culture that occupied the Middle Volga region in 400-650 CE. We analyzed assemblages from four necropolises: Bogorodski, Maklasheevka 4, Komarovka and a burial ground from Zhigulevsk 2 site. Charred remains were recorded at the bottom of burials, among cremated bones or in the in-fill of graves and mortuary vessels. The assemblages cont…
Investigations of a Rampart of Balymer Sholom Hill-Fort in 2014
The article features the results of comprehensive archaeological and geomorphological study of the exposures of defensive structures of the Sholom hill-fort known as the Early Iron Age settlement (the Ananyino cultural and historical area) and the Early Middle Ages (the Imenkovo culture). As a result of field archaeological works the researchers determined that the rampart was constructed as late as in 1st millennium A.D., and the construction of…
