Metal Production Structures of Koptyaki-Seima and Itkul Foci in the Middle Urals Metal Mining Center
The paper analyzes Alte Bronze Koptyaki and Early Iron Age Itkul metal production systems emerged in the mountainous forest Transurals. The people that formed these systems sticked to the appropriation lifestyle mainly. Both system feature advanced metal mining production in comparison with adjacent North Eurasia regions. The Modern Era and Contemporary Time brought intense industrial development за the mountainous forest Transurals. This resulte…
Precious Metal Jewelry of the Kozhumberdy Cultural Group Burials in the Ural-Mugodzhary Region
The paper presents the findings from the burials of the Kozhumberdy cultural group dated the Late Bronze Age. The burials are situated in the Ural-Mugodzhary region and contain precious metal jewelry among other tools and items. The study reviews 13 burials in 9 tombstones (6 kurgans and 3 fences) constituting 3 burial grounds, such as Ushkattinsky I, Aralcha II, Ishkinovka III. There the research found 34 items made of gold and silver. Their rad…
Historical metallurgical taxonomy
The article discusses the terminology of historical and metallurgical research of the early metal era (Chalcolithic – Bronze Age). The logic of the development of the historical and metallurgical research, as well as outstanding discoveries of recent years in this area urge the need not only to specify and clarify the meaning of some key terms, but also to introduce new taxonomic units that would contribute to a more comprehensive picture of anci…
Cultural and educational activities of I. N. Zhukov in Transbaikal Siberia (second half of the XIX — early XX century)
Deposition of Base Ore and Alloy Elements in the Bronze Age Metal in the Trans-Urals
The paper studies the problems of the geochemical specialization of the Bronze Age metal items from the eastern flank of the Ural mining and metallurgical province produced at the end of the third millennium BC — the middle of the second millennium BC in the Abashevo, Sintashta, Koptyakov-Seimino and the Alakul centers. The metal geochemical markers determination was performed by means of a local quantitative chemical composition analysis of 101 …
The Purpose of Shaft-Type Furnaces of the West Asian Metallurgical Province
The article addresses the problem of the functional purpose of shaft-type furnaces with chimneys found at the Late Bronze Age sites of Northern Eurasia. This category of thermal engineering structures became widespread in the eastern wing of the West Asian (Eurasian) metallurgical province. Thermal sets with flue channels are physical evidence of the implementation of technological algorithms of the pastoral model of metal production based primar…

Palynological Studies of Bronze Age Archaeological Objects From the Ishkinovka Mining Site
The Concept of Cultural Landscape in Retrospective of the Late Prehistoric Era (by materials of Late Bronze Age of the Southern Urals)
The article is devoted to testing the possibilities of the concept of Cultural Landscape for analyzing the spatial organization and character of archaeological sites of the Late Bronze Age (II Millennium BC) in the Southern Urals and Mugodzhary. Application of Landscape Archaeology approach helped to establish that there is a high degree of correlation between the areas of the natural and Cultural Landscapes of the Sintashta culture and local opt…
Possibilities of Landscape Archaeology in Studying Local Mobility of Steppe Pastoralists Cultures of the Paleometal Epoch
The article is devoted to testing the effectiveness of methods of cultural landscape archaeology for studying the local mobility of steppe pastoral cultures of the Paleometal Epoch (Eneolithic — Bronze Age) of Central Eurasia. In the paradigm of landscape archaeology comprehensive studies of a series of reference polygons have been recently carried out in the North-Western Caspian region, the Middle Don region, the Southern Trans-Urals, the Ural-…

The formation of human populations in South and Central Asia
Ancient human movements through Asia Ancient DNA has allowed us to begin tracing the history of human movements across the globe. Narasimhan et al. identify a complex pattern of human migrations and admixture events in South and Central Asia by performing genetic analysis of more than 500 people who lived over the past 8000 years (see the Perspective by Schaefer and Shapiro). They establish key phases in the population prehistory of Eurasia, incl…
The Ishkinino Bronze Age Mining Complex in the Southern Urals
This article presents the results of radiocarbon dating of buried soils beneath the dumps of ancient mines in the Ishkinino cobalt and copper pyrite deposit area, in the Southern Urals. The conserved upper horizons of stratigraphic sequences underlying the dumps of four mines were subjected to radiocarbon analysis. For comparison, samples from Bronze Age sites in the same area were used. Chronological ranges of the Yamnaya, Sintashta, and Kozhumb…
Bronze Age Copper Mining in the Mugodzhary
This study presents the results of geoarcheological research carried out at 19 copper ore sites belonging to the Mugodzhary mining and metallurgical center. Four types of copper ores differing in geological setting, body structure, reserve grade as well as mineral and chemical composition, were mined at the center. The geographic coordinates and the main parameters of mines (morphology, quarry size, and ore body) are specified along with the scop…
An Alakul funeral and ritual site in the Eastern Orenburg region
An unusual funeral and ritual site of the Alakul culture is described. It is situated in the northern periphery of a Late Bronze Age mining and metallurgical center in the Ural–Mugodzhary region, and is associated with the Ishkinovka group of ancient copper mines, which began to be exploited in the Early Bronze Age. A stone statue and votive objects suggest that the kurgan was a sanctuary marking a tribal area and a ritual center of a population …
Copper Mines, Chromite Copper Ores and Slags of the Ishkinino Bronze Age Archaeological Microregion, The Southern Urals
The study addresses copper mines structure and composition of copper ores and slags at the Ishkinino archaeological microregion, Orenburg Province. Both ores and slags contain chromites derived from the host ultrabasite rock. Chromites were subdivided into three categories in terms of Cr2O3 content: 45–50%, 50–55%, and 55–61%. The proportions are similar to those observed in chromites of the malachite ores of the Ishkinino cobalt-copper-pyrite de…
