Indian Residential Schools
In 2008 Canada's Prime Minister apologized to survivors of Canada's Indian Residential Schools, which had operated for almost a century, and were intended to assimilate Aboriginal children into the dominant society. Some survivors appreciated the gesture. Others were critical, especially of the Prime Minister's description of the schools as a "mistake" rather than a crime, which they convincingly argue they were, with respect to the crime of geno…
M. Tulli Ciceronis De Finibus bonorum et malorum. Libri I-II
Cicero's De finibus, written in 45 BC, consists of three separate dialogues, dealing respectively with the ethical systems of Epicureanism, Stoicism, and the `Old Academy' of Antiochus of Ascalon. An encyclopaedic survey of this nature is of particular importance for its detailed account of Stoic ethics. This critical edition of the text, based on a fresh study and collation of the manuscripts, is the first to appear for many years and the first …
Tacitus as a Historian
The subject is a large one, and in the treatment of it, from considerations of space, it is necessary to omit some of the less important aspects. The main purpose of this article is to show reason for thinking that the estimate generally prevalent of Tacitus as a historian is unreasonably high, and that the brilliance of his style dazzles the eyes of his readers and blurs them to imperfect consciousness of his many great defects. There are three …
Roman Ideas of Deity
The notes which follow, on topics connected with Roman religion, have been put together from old note-books of mine in the course of reading with care Mr. W. Warde Fowler's work which bears the title given above. Needless to say, it is always a pleasure to greet him afresh in his peculiar domain. Although the themes with which he deals are much the same as those treated in his Gifford Lectures, entitled ‘The Religious Experience of the Roman Peop…
The Municipalities of the Roman Empire
Problems of the Second Punic War
There has been general agreement both in ancient and in modern times that Hannibal's hope of final victory rested mainly on the chance of arousing widespread disaffection to the cause of Rome among the populations of Italy. It was natural that he should overrate this prospect. He knew that many of the nations which had been welded into a great confederacy under Roman leadership had fought stoutly for their independence and retained vivid memories…
The so-called ‘Lex lulia Municipalis’
The first draft of this paper was written nearly four years ago. If it had been completed for publication then, it would have contained a detailed examination of the important but uneven work of Legras, entitled La Table Latine d'Heraclée (Paris, 1907). This has now been rendered in large part needless by the criticisms of Dr. Hardy in a recent number of this Journal . In the present article I shall only refer to Legras when my own argument makes…
Problems of the Second Punic War
This conflict has for moderns a perennial interest, second only to that which is excited by the Peloponnesian war. The superior attractiveness of the struggle between the Greek cities, as felt by readers in general, is a supreme testimony to the genius of Thucydides; since in intrinsic importance for the world's history, his theme is far inferior to that which was handled by Polybius and by Livy. At the end of the Peloponnesian war few men can ha…
Human Sacrifices at Rome and other notes on Roman Religion
There is in Pliny, xxviii, 12, seq. a famous statement to the effect that his own age had seen human sacrifice carried out in the Forum Boarium: “nostra aetas vidit.” The whole subject of the ritual offering of men's lives to the gods at Rome in the historical period is full of interest and has been, of course, much discussed, but statements about it continue to be made by writers of authority, which appear to be very dubious when the ancient evi…
On Some questions of Roman Public Law
The proposals which were made at Rome from time to time to grant to “Latini” the privileges of the provocatio , wholly or in part, raise questions which touch closely the history of the evolution of constitutional and criminal law at Rome during the republican age. So far as is known, the first attempt to sever the provocatio from the general rights of the Roman franchise, and to bestow it on Italian allies, was made by M. Fulvius Flaccus, consul…
