The metaphor of sedimentation and the entanglement of metaphors in Husserl’s phenomenology of time-consciousness
This paper examines the different ways in which the metaphor and concept of sedimentation play a decisive function in Husserl’s phenomenology of time-consciousness. Through an examination of the different layers and implications of meaning in Husserl’s image of sedimentation, the entangled significance of this crucial metaphor is connected to other metaphors in Husserl’s thinking, including, most significantly, the master-metaphor of “stream.” Th…
Phenomenologies of the Digital Age
"This volume explores the broad and rich spectrum of contemporary phenomenological engagement with digital technologies. By focusing on plural forms of the digital, it offers a robust and flexible framework for contemporary phenomenological investigations in the digital age. It contends that the impact of digital technologies on the lifeworld involves both the emergence of novel fields of lived experience in need of phenomenological analysis and …

German Philosophy and the First World War
How did the First World War, the so-called 'Great War' - widely seen on all sides as 'the war to end all wars' - impact the development of German philosophy? Combining history and biography with astute philosophical and textual analysis, Nicolas de Warren addresses here the intellectual trajectories of ten significant wartime philosophers: Ernst Bloch, Martin Buber, Ernst Cassirer, Hermann Cohen, György Lukács, Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, F…
The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy and Europe
Understood historically, culturally, politically, geographically, or philosophically, the idea of Europe and notion of European identity conjure up as much controversy as consensus. The mapping of the relation between ideas of Europe and their philosophical articulation and contestation has never benefitted from clear boundaries, and if it is to retain its relevance to the challenges now facing the world, it must become an evolving conceptual lan…

Skepticism toward Violence and the Vigilance for Peace
The Rupture and The Rapture
The author interprets Michalski’s philosophical account of eternity presented in his last book on Nietzsche – The Flame of Eternity. An Interpretation of Nietzsche’s Thought. It is argued that in order to understand Michalski’s position one has to contextualize his philosophy, and refer to Heidegger’s and Patočka’s thought. The author tracks the way of how to understand the problem of eternity by reference to Ancient Greek philosophy, e.g., Anaxi…
Memory in Continental Philosophy
Over the past two centuries, memory has been an important topic of investigation within Continental thought. This chapter addresses the ways in which memory, in its various meanings and functions, has been discussed in the writings of Nietzsche, Bergson, Husserl, Heidegger, Deleuze, and Derrida. Within this tradition, as argued in this chapter, the concept of memory cannot be separated from a critical reflection on metaphors for memory as well as…
A Rumor of Philosophy
The aim of this paper is to understand the nature of Clausewitz’s philosophical thinking in On War and its two-fold relation to the catastrophic event of the Napoleonic Wars and to Clausewitz’s own reformation of a theory of war. In distinguishing between a philosophical and a military register of thinking-between a reflection on the nature of war and a theory of war-this paper examines Clausewitz’s critique of 18th century military thought, the …
The anarchy of sense

Husserl and the Promise of Time
This book provides an extensive treatment of Husserl's phenomenology of time-consciousness. Nicolas de Warren uses detailed analysis of texts by Husserl, some only recently published in German, to examine Husserl's treatment of time-consciousness and its significance for his conception of subjectivity. He traces the development of Husserl's thinking on the problem of time from Franz Brentano's descriptive psychology, and situates it in the framew…
