Imagining Feminist Futures and Reproductive Justice in Dystopian Times
Drawing on insights and observations from Argentina and the United States, this commentary takes stock of recent social and political developments and asks how we can envision feminist futures and reproductive justice in dystopian times. This is a time when the policies, institutions, and spaces pursued by movements for racial, environmental, queer, feminist, and social justice are under systematic attack, targeted from the highest levels of poli…

Feminist Politics, Coalition Building, and Movement Legacies: Abortion Rights Activism in Argentina since the 2001 Crisis
Around two decades after Argentina's 2001 crisis, the abortion rights movement flourished, becoming a powerful force against obstacles to reproductive justice in the country and mobilizing massive numbers of people from all walks of life to successfully demand the legalization of abortion. The National Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion was launched in 2005, but the seeds for several of its key features were planted during t…
“Loved by Moms and Law Enforcement Alike”: Militarizing Civilian Bodies Through Bulletproof Fashion
Body armor is no longer limited to war and security-oriented occupations. Bulletproof fashion for civilians has joined a domestic “secret arsenal” of sorts, as families with concerns about security acquire technologies to protect body, property, and household members. Bulletproof fashion thrives in the context of fear and anxiety, helps normalize the proliferation of guns and gun violence in US society, and encourages the privatization of what sh…
Abortion rights in the crosshairs: A transnational perspective on resistance strategies
Soon after the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision asserting a constitutional right to abortion, activists in Argentina organized a protest in front of the U.S. embassy. The demonstration conveyed the need for a transnational defense of reproductive rights, particularly in light of the outsized role of the U.S. in global politics. The June 24, 2022 decision that voided Roe v. Wade (Dobbs v. Jackson Women's…

Abortion Rights in Images: Visual Interventions by Activist Organizations in Argentina
Politics is about power, contestation, and negotiation. Political discourse relies not only on the persuasiveness of words, rational argumentation, and ethical appeals but also on the deployment of images. Political disputes around abortion are paradigmatic of the crucial role that images can play. While conservative groups have deployed powerful imagery to present their moral and political convictions, abortion rights organizations are increasin…
Queering abortion rights: Notes from Argentina
In recent years, there have been calls in activist spaces to 'queer' abortion rights advocacy, to incorporate non-normative notions of gender identity and sexuality into abortion struggles and services. Argentina provides an interesting site in which to examine these developments, since there is a longstanding movement for abortion rights in a context of illegal abortion and a recent ground-breaking Gender Identity Law that recognises key trans r…
Collective Memory and the Language of Human Rights: Attitudes toward Torture in Contemporary Argentina
The democratization that followed the last military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983) has been influenced by human rights organizations' relentless work to bring about truth and justice regarding the consequences of state terrorism and to keep the memory of that period alive. These efforts frame the discursive context in which human rights violations, including torture, are interpreted in contemporary Argentina. Argentine interviewees from ac…
Transnational Body Projects: Media Representations of Cosmetic Surgery Tourism in Argentina and the United States
Cosmetic surgery tourism (CST) is part of the growing trend known as medical tourism. As people in the global North travel to less affluent countries to modify their bodies through cosmetic surgery, their transnational body projects are influenced by both economic "materialities" and traveling cultural "imaginaries." This article presents a content analysis of media representations of cosmetic surgery tourism in a major country sending patient-to…
Cultures of Denial: Avoiding Knowledge of State Violations of Human Rights in Argentina and the United States
Why and how do individuals distance themselves from information about their government's participation in torture and other human rights violations? Such citizen (non)response implicitly legitimates and thus facilitates the continuation of abusive state actions. Drawing on a model of socially organized denial, we explore how sociocultural contexts and practices mediate individuals’ avoidance, justification, normalization, silencing, and outright …
Selling the War? System‐Justifying Effects of Commercial Advertising on Civilian Casualty Tolerance
In times of war, news media coverage of the plight of civilian casualties plays a critical role in shaping attitudes regarding war's human costs. We proposed that these attitudes may also be surreptitiously influenced by the commercial advertisements that often accompany this coverage. Specifically, we hypothesized that when newspaper articles pertaining to civilian victims of war are flanked by luxury ads, conservatives, relative to liberals, wi…

Playful cards, serious talk: A Qualitative Research Technique to Elicit Women's Embodied Experiences
This article explores the benefits, drawbacks, and potential applications of an interviewing technique based on the use of cards printed with key research concepts related to the body. Informed by a feminist approach and a sociological interest in human embodiment, this method offered a playful way to elicit women's embodied experiences in Argentina. The 'concept cards' were tangible objects that helped focus the interviewees' attention, without …

Contesting Racism: Democratic Citizenship, Human Rights, and Antiracist Politics in Argentina
In Argentina, racism is a relatively hidden but entrenched social problem that has undermined democratic citizenship and social justice efforts. An analysis of ethno-racial discourses (by the state, in the media, and in self-identity representations) as well as political strategies for contesting racism reveals that civil society and governmental organizations have extended frameworks that already had resonance in Argentina, borrowed approaches f…
Poner el Cuerpo: Women's Embodiment and Political Resistance in Argentina
This article explores the relationship between women's embodiment and political resistance in Argentina during 2002-2003. This was a time of socioeconomic crisis, influenced by neoliberal globalization. In this tumultuous context, women's bodies became embattled sites, shaken by the crisis but also actively engaged in constructing a new society and new forms of womanhood. Bodies are important to understanding political resistance, as reflected by…
Quotidian Disruption and Women's Activism in Times of Crisis, Argentina 2002-2003
Argentina recently underwent a period of economic crisis that shook societal foundations. People turned to collective action for social and political change, and women were at the forefront of many protests. This crisis offers an opportunity to study a moment of 'quotidian disruption'-when routine practices and ingrained assumptions are threatened-as an impetus for mobilization. The authors draw on ethnographic observations and analyze 44 in-dept…
