  • Heterogeneous operations and opportunities to reduce CO 2 emissions in global blast furnace ironmaking

    Open Access•Elina S Hoffmann, Valerie J Karplus et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The blast furnace (BF) process accounts for over 90% of global iron ore-based steel production and remains a major contributor to CO 2 emissions. This study investigates the variability in operations across the global BF fleet and its impact on CO 2 emissions. Using plant-level data from 2011 to 2021, we find that variation in the composition of inputs results in emissions ranging from 1.20 to 2.08 tons of CO 2 per ton of hot metal (tCO 2 tHM −1 …

  • Anticipating the impacts of light-duty vehicle electrification on the U.S. automotive service workforce

    Open Access•Rachel L R Reolfi, Erica R H Fuchs et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

This paper draws on publicly available data from the Current Population Survey and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as estimates from 25 studies, to understand how a transition to electric vehicles may impact workers in the vehicle services sector. We examine the structure of the current vehicle service workforce, characterize its unique vulnerabilities along several dimensions, and evaluate how it may be impacted by rising EV adoption. Ca…

  • Co-benefits of China’s climate policy for air quality and human health in China and transboundary regions in 2030

Open Access•Mingwei Li, Da Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Climate policies targeting CO 2 emissions from fossil fuels can simultaneously reduce emissions of air pollutants and their precursors, thus mitigating air pollution and associated health impacts. Previous work has examined co-benefits of climate policy from reducing PM 2.5 in rapidly-developing countries such as China, but have not examined co-benefits from ozone and its transboundary impact for both PM 2.5 and ozone. Here, we compare the air qu…

Open Access•Sergey Paltsev, Y-H Henry Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Transportation•2018

  • Towards a political economy framework for wind power

Michael R Davidson, Fredrich Kahrl et al.•BOOK•Towards a political economy…•2016

We propose a general taxonomy of the political economy challenges to wind power development and integration, highlighting the implications in terms of actors, interests, and risks. Applying this framework to three functions in China’s electricity sector—planning and project approval, generator cost recovery, and balancing area coordination—we find evidence of challenges common across countries with significant wind investments, despite institutio…
