  • Conspiracy theorists are not the problem; Conspiracy liars are

    Brian Keeley•ARTICLE•Inquiry•2025

In an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times (08/06/2022), entitled Alex Jones is no kind of ‘theorist’, LZ Granderson writes that although the ubiquitous recent ‘conspiracy theorist’ of American journalism is Alex Jones, that appellation is not appropriate. He argues that Jones rarely ‘theorizes’ about events; he simply lies about them. In past work, I have argued that the starting points of many conspiracy theories are two forms of errant data:…

  • Troubling Transplant Temporality through Crip Technoscience and a Sensory Aesthetics of Time, Machine, and Health

Open Access•Suze G Berkhout, Suze Berkhout et al.•ARTICLE•Catalyst Feminism Theory…•2024

Taking up technologies that act as a “bridge” to transplant, we explore what the lifeworlds of a transplant patient and their loved ones interacting with these technologies tells us about the temporality of transplantation and the imperative of cure.By engaging with clinical literature and practices, transdisciplinary crip technoscience theorizing, and multimodal, multisensory artistic form, we bring together sick and disabled people’s expertise …

  • Conspiracy Theory and (or as) Folk Psychology

    Brian Keeley•ARTICLE•Social Epistemology•2023

One issue within conspiracy theory theory is whether, or to what extent, our central concept – – should map on to the common, lay sense of the term. Some conspiracy theory theorists insist that we use the term as everyday people use it. So, for example, if the term has a pejorative connotation in everyday parlance, then academic work on the concept should reflect that. Other conspiracy theory theorists take a more revisionist approach, arguing in…

  • Income Inequality

    Brian Keeley•BOOK•Income Inequality•2015

  • From the Common Sense to Self-consciousness

Brian L Keeley, Brian Keeley•ARTICLE•The Senses and Society•2012

  • The Role of Neurobiology in Differentiating the Senses

Brian L Keeley, Brian Keeley•CHAPTER•The Oxford handbook of philosophy…•2009

This article looks at the role of neurobiology in explaining the distinction among the senses. It presents the Aristotelian account of the senses and presents the view that that psychological facts alone are sufficient to account for the different senses, or at least that organ criterion is far less important than some have argued. It discusses Johannes Müller's nineteenth-century neurophysiological characterization of the senses and its applicat…

  • International Migration

Brian Keeley, Brian Keeley Brian•BOOK•International Migration•2009

About 190 million people around the world live outside their country of birth. These migrants bring energy, entrepreneurship and fresh ideas to our societies. But there are downsides: young migrants who fail in education, adults who donâ t find work and, of course, unregulated migration. Such challenges can make migration a political lightning rod and a topic for angry debate. Drawing on the unique expertise of the OECD, this book moves beyond …

  • Internationale Migration

Brian Keeley, Brian Keeley Brian•BOOK•Internationale Migration•2009

Etwa 190 Millionen Menschen leben weltweit auà erhalb ihres Herkunftslands.

    Brian Keeley•BOOK•Le capital humain•2007

  • Shocking Lessons from Electric Fish

    Open Access•Brian L Keeley, Brian Keeley•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2000•Cited by: 8•References: 25

This paper explores the relationship between psychology and neurobiology in the context of cognitive science. Are the sciences that constitute cognitive science independent and theoretically autonomous, or is there a necessary interaction between them? I explore Fodor's Multiple Realization Thesis (MRT) which starts with the fact of multiple realization and purports to derive the theoretical autonomy of special sciences (such as psychology) from …

  • Neuroethology and the Philosophy of Cognitive Science

    Open Access•Brian L Keeley, Brian Keeley•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Neuroethology is a branch of biology that studies the neural basis of naturally occurring animal behavior. This science, particularly a recent program called computational neuroethology , has a similar structure to the interdisciplinary endeavor of cognitive science. I argue that it would be fruitful to conceive of cognitive science as the computational neuroethology of humans. However, there are important differences between the two sciences, in…

  • Of Conspiracy Theories

Brian L Keeley, Brian Keeley•ARTICLE•The Journal of Philosophy•1999

As the end of the Millennium approaches, conspiracy theories are increasing in number and popularity. In this short essay, I offer an analysis of conspiracy theories inspired by Hume's discussion of miracles. My first conclusion is that whereas Hume can argue that miracles are, by definition, explanations we are not warranted in believing, there is nothing analytic that will allow us to distinguish good from bad conspiracy theories. There is no a…
