    Jack S Damico, Jack D’Amico•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2015

The Dangers and Virtues of Theatricality in Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso Jack D’Amico In his essay “Alle origini della commedia,” M. Apollonio identifies the Renaissance court, particularly the Estense court and its leading playwright Ludovico Ariosto, as the institution that stabilized the multifaceted comic spirit inherited from fourteenth-century Italy. From a more critical angle he suggests that the unity and order derived from classical models …

Kathleen J Abendroth, Jack S Damico•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2009

This investigation presents analysis of the catastrophic reactions of a child with pervasive developmental disorder—not otherwise specified (PDDNOS). Jack D''Amico, Jack D'Amico et al.•ARTICLE•Theatre Journal•1991

The play La Calandria of Bernardo Dovizi Da Bibbiena was staged in the Ducal Palace at Urbino on 6 February 1513. Baldassare Castiglione left a description of this performance in a letter to Ludovico Canossa, who, like Bibbiena, had a role to play in II Cortegiano, a work which did much to enhance the courtly image of Urbino. This essay begins with that description because it illustrates the kind of control the court exercised over theater in Ren…

  • Paying Attention to Pronunciation

George Yule, Philip Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•1987•Cited by: 5

U It is widely recognized that a crucial component in developing effective second language pronunciation is, in fact, the development of particular listening skills. In many textbooks ostensibly dedicated to improving ESL pronunciation, a substantial number of exercises are devoted to making sure that the student, as listener, can first recognize the types of sound distinctions that are phonemic in English. As Prator and Robinett (1985) claim in …

Using a confidence-rating scale, the self-monitoring abilities of 67 intermediate ESL students enrolled in a University-level pronunciation/listening course were assessed over a seven week period and compared with test accuracy scores. Re…

  • The Virtue of Ruin in Machiavelli's Florentine Histories

    Jack D'Amico, Jack S Damico•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•1969

We find in Machiavelli's work frequent repetition of a patterned re- lationship between human and natural orders that he describes in the Florentine Histories as ruin, birth and expansion.* Ruin does not simply precede the birth of cities, it constitutes and creates the very necessity for government, preparing the way by teaching men to heed a founder strong and wise enough to bring about the birth of civil order. ^Man is wed to and rises above n…
