Open Access•Maria Moberg Stephenson, Maria Andersson Vogel et al.•ARTICLE•Young•2026•References: 6

The aim of this article is to explore how place and physical space are perceived by girls and young women living in two neighbourhoods marked as marginalized and how they orientate in urban spaces and their everyday lives. Data were collected through teller-focused, walk-along and photo-elicitation interviews with twenty-one 13- to 22-year-old girls and young women in racially diverse neighbourhoods in two Swedish cities and analysed using queer …

  • Blurring the Lines Between Victimhood and Responsibilization? Sex as Behavioral Problems in Court Decisions on Compulsory Care of Young People

    Open Access•Maria Andersson Vogel, Tove Pettersson•ARTICLE•Feminist Criminology•2024•References: 5

Formal social control of girls has historically focused on disciplining their sexual behavior, and studies show this is still present. This article analyses how authorities describe and give meaning to young people’s sexual behavior when assessing their need of compulsory care. The results show that in the few cases when boys’ sexual behavior is highlighted, it concerns sexual delinquency. The assessments of girls’ sexual behavior largely regards…

  • Ensuring Failure: The Impact of Class on Girls in Swedish Secure Care

    Maria Andersson Vogel•ARTICLE•Girlhood Studies•2021•References: 11

Historically, the regulation of girls through institutionalization has been guided by bourgeois norms of femininity, including virtue, domesticity, and motherhood. Using a Foucauldian perspective on the production of subjects in Swedish secure care, I investigate whether or not middle-class norms of femininity, centered today around self-regulation, still guide the regulation of working-class girls. By analyzing data from an ethnographic study, I…

  • Introduction to Special Issue: Exploring Confinement from the Perspectives of Young People

Open Access•Ann-Karina Henriksen, Maria Andersson Vogel et al.•ARTICLE•Young•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 3

How do young people experience confinement, and what are the consequences of being confined? These are the key questions we wish to address in this special issue. The confinement of young people is a contested issue and generally not given much attention. In most societies, only a small number of young people experience being confined. However, because confinement is one of the most intrusive forms of control and punishment, and often directed at…

  • An Endeavour for Autonomy: How Girls Understand Their Lived Experiences of Being Referred to Secure Care

    Open Access•Maria Andersson Vogel•ARTICLE•Young•2017•Cited by: 14•References: 9

In discussion of troubled adolescent girls, their mental health often is in focus and a discourse constructing girls as vulnerable victims therefore dominates Swedish social services and secure care. This article is an investigation of how the girls themselves are navigating the discursive terrain where understandings of troubled adolescent girls in secure care are regulated. The results show that even though the girls’ stories show considerable …

  • Good idea, bad prerequisite, zero result – the meaning of context in implementing aftercare for young people in secure unit care

Open Access•Maria Andersson Vogel, Marie Sallnäs et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Children s Services•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to report results from a quasi-experimental study of outcomes of a leaving care project for youth placed in secure unit care and second, based on the (zero) results, to analyse and discuss the interplay between organisational boundaries, social work and the target group when implementing a project such as the one studied. Design/methodology/approach – The outcome study had a quasi-experimenta…
