  • Three Recent and Lesser-Known Glacier-Related Flood Mechanisms in High Mountain Environments

    Open Access•Alton C Byers, Dan H Shugar et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2022

Glacial lake outburst floods, and specifically those triggered by avalanche-induced seiche waves, have been studied in considerable detail during the past several decades. Less attention has been given to other cryospheric flood phenomena, which include floods sourced primarily from englacial conduits, permafrost-linked rockfall and avalanches, and earthquake-triggered glacial lake floods. The article reviews examples of each phenomenon, based on…

  • Landslide Susceptibility Mapping and Assessment Using Geospatial Platforms and Weights of Evidence (WoE) Method in the Indian Himalayan Region

Open Access•Amit Kumar Batar, Teiji Watanabe•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

The Himalayan region and hilly areas face severe challenges due to landslide occurrences during the rainy seasons in India, and the study area, i.e., the Rudraprayag district, is no exception. However, the landslide related database and research are still inadequate in these landslide-prone areas. The main purpose of this study is: (1) to prepare the multi-temporal landslide inventory map using geospatial platforms in the data-scarce environment;…

  • Pastoral Practices and Common Use of Pastureland

    Open Access•Teiji Watanabe, Shigeru Shirasaka•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

This study describes pastoralism practiced in the Karakul village, Northeast of Tajikistan, and discusses its sustainability. Tajikistan introduced a market economy at independence in 1991, and pastoralism is now practiced on a family-unit basis. The families in Karakul graze livestock in their summer pastureland ( jailoo ) and move their livestock to winter pastureland around the village ( kyshtoo ). They make groups for pasturage with several f…

  • Modeling Determinants of Urban Growth in Conakry, Guinea

    Open Access•Arafan Traore, Teiji Watanabe•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2017•Cited by: 3

The main objective of the present study was to integrate a logistic regression model (LRM), a geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques to analyze and quantify urban growth patterns and investigate the relationship between urban growth and various driving forces. Landsat images from 1986, 2000, and 2016 derived from the TM, ETM+, and OLI sensors respectively were used to simulate an urban growth probability map for Co…

  • Abandonment of Agricultural Land and Its Consequences

Open Access•Narendra Raj Khanal, Teiji Watanabe•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2006

This paper examines the extent, causes, and consequences of abandonment of agricultural land near the village of Sikles in the Nepal Himalaya. Socioeconomic information was collected in a household survey. Abandoned agricultural land and geomorphic damage were mapped at plot level for an area of 149.6 ha. Plot-level analysis showed that nearly 49% of all khet land and 37% of all bari land had been abandoned. About 10% of all khet land had been co…

  • Reliability of Land Use/Land Cover Assessment in Montane Nepal

Open Access•Chinta Mani Gautam, Teiji Watanabe•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2004

The Kangchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA, Nepal) was the subject of a comparative study on land use/land cover change, using the maps and air photographs available for 2 different years (1978/79 and 1992). Digitized land use maps for 1978 (LUM78) and topographical maps for 1992 (TOPO92) were first interpreted using a Geographic Information System (GIS); this was followed by comparative interpretation of black and white air photographs from the sa…

Open Access•Teiji Watanabe, Satoshi Kameyama et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1995

  • Soil Erosion on Yak-Grazing Steps in the Langtang Himal, Nepal

    Open Access•Teiji Watanabe•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1994

The distribution of shallow soil-erosion scars (up to 1.2 m in depth) was mapped on a scale of 1:19,200 in the upper valley of the Langtang Himal, central Nepal. It coincides with the yak-grazing grassland along transhumance routes. Since soil erosion occurs on the stepped slopes, slope origin was examined using the grazing model of Howard and Higgins (1987). The result shows that all stepped slopes were formed by yak grazing, except those near T…

Open Access•Teiji Watanabe, Jack D Ives et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1994

  • Environmental Factors Influencing the Landscape of the Kuranosuke Cirque, Tateyama Range, Northern Japanese Alps

    Open Access•Teiji Watanabe•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1989

A grid analysis on alpine environmental factors was carried out in the Kuranosuke Cirque, central Japan (36.60N, 137.60E), as part of a geoecological study. The factors analysed were: maximum snow depth; snow-free period; surface materials; slope form; mean slope gradient; and surface processes. As a result, the cirque was divided into eight homogeneous areas (landscape units): 1) Pinus pumila-covered boulder area; 2) Pinus pumila-covered rubble …
