Multiscalar motivations for immigration politics and policymaking in US cities
Planning beyond Mass Incarceration
The policing and penal systems play an oversized role in shaping the built environment and budgets of cities, alongside the lives of urban residents. Law enforcement systems are also deeply inequitable with poor residents, and communities of color disproportionately harmed by the violences of the system. Planning’s contribution to the creation of durable spatial stratification in the built environment implicates planning in the class and race dis…
Understanding local government’s engagement in immigrant policy making in the US
While immigration policy making has traditionally been the sole prerogative of nation-states, recent research has documented increased instances of migration policy making at sub-national levels across migrant receiving societies. These findings have begun to bring attention to the ways in which immigration policy is now being set through the actions of lower levels of government. This chapter extends these findings, arguing for attention to the …
OurChangingClimate
OurChangingClimate incorporates social media tools into a public practice design project that examines climate change as a place-based and everyday experience. Based on the pilot stage of the project, an initial series of workshops with youth in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, we found that we were able to sow seeds for strengthened community resilience by creating a hybrid online–in real life (IRL) space where participants could gain n…
Determinants of county migrant regularization policymaking in the United States
While immigration policymaking has traditionally been the sole prerogative of nation states, research has documented increased instances of migration policymaking at sub-national levels across migrant-receiving societies. This paper examines the temporally and spatially distinctive dynamics that underscore the adoption of these policies at the county level in the United States. The study considers the implementation of migrant labor market regula…
Spatial patterns of international migrant resident settlement and incorporation in Winnipeg Manitoba
Comparing the settlement patterns of two cohorts of international movers (2001–2006 and 2010–2011) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, highlights the relationships between the settlement choices and actions of immigrant residents, and the economic, social, and built environmental conditions in place. Data from the Canadian census are analyzed through a spatial lag negative binomial regression model with results interpreted through a relational incorporation f…

Limits to culture: Urban regeneration vs. dissident art by Malcolm Miles." Visual Studies, 32(2), pp. 194–195
Negotiating Places of Incorporation
Negotiations over immigration in place involve interactions and encounters of immigrant and non-immigrant actors, organisations and institutions. This study analyses the role of community development organisations in these negotiations and compares organisations in Winnipeg, Canada, Providence, the USA, and Copenhagen, Denmark, through two relational frameworks—incorporation and relational urban comparatives. In these three cases, state resources…
A Neighborhood That Never Changes
Using geographic information systems to compare the density of stores selling tobacco and alcohol
Based on these findings, the authors conclude that to reduce the impact of tobacco on socially and economically disadvantaged communities, the issuing of tobacco permits requires more regulation and oversight and should take into consideration the density and actual location of other licensees in an area
