  • The last interglacial sea-level high stand on the southern Cape coastline of South Africa

    Open Access•Andrew S Carr, Mark D Bateman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

The continental margin of southern South Africa exhibits an array of emergent marginal marine sediments permitting the reconstruction of long-term eustatic sea-level changes. We report a suite of optical luminescence ages and supplementary amino acid racemization data, which provide paleosea-level index points for three sites on this coastline. Deposits in the Swartvlei and Groot Brak estuaries display tidal inlet facies overlain by shoreface or …

  • A Holocene–late Pleistocene aeolian record from lunette dunes of the western Free State panfield, South Africa

    Open Access•Peter J Holmes, Mark D Bateman et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The greatest concentration of pans in southern Africa occurs in the western Free State province, South Africa. A feature of many Free State pans is their fringing lunettes, located on the southern and south-eastern margins. Lunette dunes associated with pans in the neighbouring and presently drier Kalahari region show depositional ages, determined by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, primarily in the Holocene. However, to date, the …

  • A dating intercomparison study on Late Stone Age coastal midden deposits, South Africa

    Open Access•Mark D Bateman, Andrew S Carr et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2008•Cited by: 17•References: 16

The southern and western coastlines of South Africa have an extensive archaeological record with many sites associated with widespread eolian deposits. While much of this rich archaeological record is based on cave sites, evidence of Late Stone Age occupation is additionally preserved in the form of open‐site shell middens. We present here a comparative study of the application of amino acid racemization (AAR), optically stimulated luminescence (…

  • Prehistoric brass instruments

    Peter Holmes, Peter J Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1981•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Brass’ instruments, only recently made of brass, and indisputably of ancient origin, enjoyed a greater diversity of usage than recent work has allowed. While some groups, such as the lurs, may have been sounded more or less in the modern manner, others, such as the Irish horns, were more probably used differently ‐ as variable‐tone‐colour instruments. Both these groups had deep roots in their home soil and were clearly largely indigenously develo…
