Interest in the history of Rutland, England’s smallest county, goes back a long way. It was in 1684 that James Wright, having profited from a sojourn in the Tower of London to undertake his researc
Measuring denitrification and the N2O
Denitrification, a significant pathway of reactive N-loss from terrestrial soils, impacts on agricultural production and the environment. Net production and emission of the denitrification product nitrous oxide (N2O) is readily quantifiable, but measuring denitrification's final product, dinitrogen (N2), against a high atmospheric background remains challenging. This review examines methods quantifying both N2 and N2O emissions, based on inhibito…
Mitigation of nitrous oxide emissions in the context of nitrogen loss reduction from agroecosystems
Nitrous oxide emissions from ruminant urine

Petrography and stone implements
Early macroscopic studies of prehistoric stone implements were not very fruitful. The technique of thin‐sectioning, however, enables rocks to be described in detail. Comparisons based on mineralogy and texture allow petrological groups to be established, some of which can be traced to working areas, others to more general sources. Limitations within which the petrologist must work are described, and the archaeologist is cautioned to be aware of t…
The petrological identification of stone implements from East Anglia
For many years a programme of examining stone implements has been organized by the Council for British Archaeology's Sub-Committee for Implement Petrology. The East Anglian aspect of this programme, covering the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, has long been active, being administered from Norwich Castle Museum under the auspices of the CBA, first by the late R. Rainbird Clarke and more recently by the authors of this repor…
